    Is this of any use?

  • Are you using Internet Explorer? I would guess you are. But please say what browser you are using. (And if you have tried a different browser, such as Firefox, does that have the same problem?)

Can you give a few links to websites* where you can't see the pictures, and websites where you can?

As a rule of thumb, if you visit the BBC site and things don't seem right, then the problem's probably at your end. How does the BBC site look?

    * To provide links simply right click on the address that appears at the top of your browser (the bit where it starts "http") and you'll get a little menu. Choose copy. then paste this link into a new message on here. Again you can paste this by right clicking and selecting Paste from the little menu that pops up. You said you're a novice so sorry if these instructions are overly simple (at least, I hope they're simple!)

EDIT: I just realised you said you can't see pictures on the John Lewis website (among others). On their home at present there are four small pictures with titles like "Christmas Decorations". Can you not see these pictures? I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. If this is the case, and you haven't yet tried a different browser, then I would recommend trying Firefox (assuming you're not using it already). If you can see them using Firefox then at least you know it's a problem with Internet Explorer. Or if you can't then the problem is more fundamental.

You can download Firefox from here:

Thanks alot for the detailed reply. im using internet explorer i also use firefox as well but same problem exists on both browsers.the BBC site looks fine no problem there. the main page of john lewis is ok aswell its just when i go further to check items there are no pictures just boxes with a red x displayed in them the tesco website seems fine but alot of the other ones like littlewoods, debenhams, boots their main pages open up fine but again when i try to check items i just get the box with the x. really driving me crazy have not a clue as what to do.

Check the proxy settings in your browser and ensure that you're not using any form of webcache provided by your ISP. Also, if you're using an out of date browser, this can cause problems with webcache.
