Don't know where you are, but I pay 42 pounds a month for the Next Generation gym in York.

Yes, I'm a student, and yes that seems very expensive - but it has lots of modern equipment, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, indoor and outdoor heated pool, nice bar, restaurant, and various other things on site.

I see it as an investment in my mental health too. And let's face it, most students are probably spending a similar amount each month on alcohol and going out.

I got them to waive the joining fee. I know there are cheaper memberships if you're willing to go during off-peak times.

I'd recommend them - working out is now a pleasurable experience. I'd rather pay more for a few creature comforts than brave the other local rundown gyms I have seen.

I live in a seaside resort and we don't have any local authority gyms around here. We have joined a gym in a hotel. We joined for 6 months and it cost £300 for the 4 of us (two adults and 2 children, 13 and 10), so that is £50 a month for us all. Just under £12 a week, about the same as it would cost for the four of us to go swimming once.

There is an indoor pool, which can be seen from the gym, so we can keep an eye on the boys when dh and I are in the gym. If it is quiet, the boys can use the machines (they both play football, and dh has his football coaching qualifications, so he knows what they can and can't do), they can both come in the steam room and the sauna with us, and believe me, it has really helped with my 13 year old son's spots having a steam. In the summer we will be able to use the outdoor pool.

We have been going for over two months now, and I think the most people that have been there at one time has been about 15 (Including the 4 of us). So far we have gone down at least 4 times a week, so I feel we have had our money's worth.

I'm in a Fitness First women only gym, its 35 a month to be able to go in any time, classes, steam room, sauna, free juice and tea/coffee, free daily paper (the Mail, but it is free!) and free dvd rental. They are doing a promotion at the moment so you don't pay a big joining fee. I think it's quite easy to get my money's worth when you consider what is included:)
I also got 3 sessions with a personal trainer for £15. Made me feel like a celeb;)
