Where are the car bargains?

Every 6 months or so I think about buying a new car, and do the rounds of dealers.I have a Peugeot 307 Diesel, 02 reg., 100700 miles. I come away feeling insulted by the offers-went to 2 dealers today-no discount offered, one wouldn't even tell me what they would value my car at in P/X! Do they think I'm a pushover??
I love my car-it ticks all the boxes, which is one of the reasons I haven't changed it,but I realise it may start to cost me serious money. Any suggestions please?

  • I wouldn't really want to take an 02 plate 307 hdi in PX to be honest as it'll be full of problems. Expensive ones at that...

Bad time for dealers, they aren't selling much and auctions aren't doing much trade eithe. Last thing they want is a high mileage Pug stuck on the forecourt until next Spring.

    Suggestion - e-bay.

I've been in this position recently (over the last month or so). I had until yesterday a 52 plate Corsa and it has cost me about £800 and a lot of tears/stuck not being able to get to work/having to pay £100 to have it towed to the garage to have an £80 diagnostic check, that was before I had to pay to get it put right. It had done 85K which isn't masses, but things were going wrong big time. My bloke and I are scraping together every penny we can to get married next year and I was desperately hoping to make the car last until then but I had to accept that one, I had to get rid of it, and 2, they would only give me a fraction of what they are going for on Autotrader etc. but it had to go. Sure enough when I went to pick up my new car yesterday the dealer told me he'd sold mine...I bought mine 3 years ago for 5K and I let it go for 1.5K. It was a hard decision to make but it had to go.
One day I will be out of my student debt, one day...

There are bargains out there.......... if you have no part ex or have a way of disposing/selling your old car. The factors that count against you are that you have a French car, it's 6 years old and it's done over 100k.

Also remember that bargain prices new or nearly new will depress the secondhand value of your Peugeot.

  • Many dealers are simply just choc-ful of unsold used stock already so simply cannot take on any more. Your car is over 100k mileage...msot dealers have aforecourt limit of about 70k miles to try and retail it themselves, anything over that mileage usually goes straight to auction...so you can take that route yourself too.

Glass's guide and similar forcast price guides are not being adhered to right now, we work with two trade buyers and for the last 3-4 tmhs they have been working at 20-40% BELOW trade guides as the market is so tough.

Dealers aren't obliged to take your car in as a PX...if they don't think they can sell it then it makes commercial sense to walk away from the deal for them..they need cars they can make a bit of money on..not lose more money than they are already doing at present.

I think this is..overall..why you're not getting any bites - as an 02 plate it is around 6 to 6.5 yrs old with high mileage. It's not an attractive car for any main franchised dealer to take in (and absorb the cost of taking it to auction for you) against a new car where you also want a hefty discount on top.

I know it isn't what you want to hear but you really need to get rid of your old car yourself and simply negotiate for a new car deal as a seperate transaction...trying to force an unattractive PX into the bargain will turn dealers off right now..not on..! Many are stopping valuing PX's altogether until they can get rid of some stock they are already committed to.

Run until it dies or until this economic climate improves. It is worth a lot more to you than to antone else. Better the devil you know and all that. When it comes to within a month of its MOT pop it in and see what happens, assuming a fail figure out if it is worth repairing. Don't bother paying for full services just oil and filters and a check over of brakes etc and replace as necessary but not before.

When it fails MOT big time, or needs something expensive replacing then change it. And if you're expecting either of these to happen fairly quickly you can understand dealers' reluctance to take your Pug in P/X.

Thanks for the replies. In fact, every dealer so far has offered me P/X (£1200 if buying a used car, £2K if a new one) It's just that they're still talking list price at the moment. So, I think I'll keep it until it's no longer an economic proposition. I'd have to pay out a couple of hundred pounds each month in repayments and that would pay for a few repairs if needed. Plus, most of the mileage has been on motorways and she still cruises effortlessly.

By giving an extra £800 against new is effectively £800 discount off list price.
