weekend away

Hi
I am looking at going away for a long weekend in march time with my mum/
I want to take her somewhere in this country [she has cancer and so cant fly] so i will be driving.
So far we have been to bath, york, canterbury, norfolk, but am looking to go somewhere different, i am trying to do lots of different things for her.

She likes walking [but cant do hill walking etc anymore] although she likes to go round statley homes and shopping.

Can anyone suggest any where to go, we live in herts but i dont mind driving so 4 hours in the car is fine.
Thanks in advance

Or you could take the Eurostar to Paris, Brussels or Bruges

OH and I had a fab weekend in Shaftesbury a few years back - the cathedral is lovely to go round and you can drive to Gold Hill (I think that's what it's called) which is the the big hill where they filmed the old Hovis ad.

Also the Cotswolds are lovely and villages like Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold well worth a visit.

Derbyshire is very nice and has a few national trust places but would they be open in March?

I would second the idea of the Eurostar. The man and I had a weekend in Brussels this summer and it was fabulous! We got engaged this Fall at Bournemouth, and liked it so much that we're going to get married there. The beach is absolutely wonderful, there are tons of shops, old homes, and the New Forest is 20 minutes or so by train.

How about visiting Woodstock/ Blenheim Palace? Lovely walks in the palace grounds and gardens.

I was going to say Scotland... but that's a bit far and it could still be snowing here in March.

  • Hi thanks for all your posts.
The reason of staying in this country is my mum cant get insurance and we are just reluctant to leave this country, incase anything happens.

I think the idea of cambridge is greatand will def look into that.
The weekend i have picked is 20th march which is mothers day, so i think most natonal trust places will be open.

Thanks again for all your ideas.

You don't need health insurance for EU Countries like France/Belgium, just get an E111 certificate from the post office & you're covered. Be adventurous!

It's a card now, buglawton, instead of a certificate. You can pick up the forms in the post office and send it off and you get sent a card that lasts 5 years. It's free too.
