Back mobiliser

  • I have a chronic back condition and own a mobiliser and can tell you for me, the mobiliser helps ease back pain and helps maintain a degree of mobility in the back. The actual experience of using this device isn't as pleasurable than a 'beauty' style back massage. It really is quite vigorous but with this deep tissue kneading, comes real relief after treatment.

    I have tried many treatments, chiropractor, acupuncture, mobiliser, exercises (cat, etc) and spa style massages and I believe for me, there is a place for all but the spa style massages. It is imperative for those with back conditions to maintain back health to avoid the need for early surgical intervention and the slippery slope this brings.

    I am looking into the purchase of a new, slightly less vigorous mobiliser so keep a lookout- there may be an affordable used mobiliser available for sale soon.
  • I tried the one from BackInAction, as I'm an osteopath and wanted to see if it helped my stiff unyielding thoracic spine.

    I guess that I approach the whole issue of mid back, neck and shoulder problems from two perspectives;

    1. the ability of the thoracic spine to extend and rotate is crucial - as we lose this through life it impacts the thoracic spine itself (pain and stiffness), very directly the ability of the neck to move and cope, and directly the ability of the shoulder joints to work properly.
    2. any kind of exercise or activity works better if done daily (or nearly daily!) - a workout once every couple of weeks, a massage every so often, etc. etc. simply don't make enough cumulative changes.

    My experience of the BackInAction mobiliser was it worked very well in terms of the above. It is expensive, but it is good.

    If your predominant problem is LOW BACK pain, I am less sure of the mobiliser's effects, as the mobiliser has a powerful effect on the thoracic spine, but less so on the lumbars. Would be worth trying though.

    If your thoracic spine is already very mobile, but just hurts because of not enough muscle, postural/sitting load and so on, then again, the mobiliser might not help so much.

    But if you have an increasingly stiff thoracic spine and you are aware of this, of the effects on the neck, on the ability of the shoulders to put your hand behind your back etc. then the mobiliser will definitely help - either a good amount or a lot, in my opinion.

    Hope this helps!
  • Gets good reviews but cost is a bit scary
    Maybe worth trying a device called LumbaCurve designed for lower back pain relief and retailing at around £70 / $105
    Have a look at lumbacurve reviews. The good news is that they offer a full money back guarantee as well.
