  • there was a programme on Channel 4 (or Five maybe) just recently that had someone used a recorded message and simply put it by the phone when companies like this rang up. It went something like, why don't you telll me more, I would like to know about that, would you like to explain a bit better...

I know this won't stop them ringing you but perhaps if you get this you can record it and play it to them... It sent the sales people in the programme off packing?
  • I know a few years ago, that I had regular Junk Mail through the post, sometimes 2 to 3 times per week from Capital One... So I sent added Junk Mail in their post paid envelopes.. It still continued.. In the end I stopped it, by sending paper via the shredder cut into little pieces; smaller than conffetti.. That stopped it, also picked up 60 pre-paid envelopes in a train once, and sent them off.. So I suppose they have now found the telephone cheaper... I suppose could always complain to them via letter now, and send conffetti in the letter, so it goes all over the office floor.. That should stop the harrassment via the phone

Terrible arent I, but it works?

I have a spare mobile which I use when people insist on having a telephone number and I just don't answer it if I don't know who it is.

lol - I saw that too - very funny...

Personally, I have tried a slightly different approach when someone called and asked "Is Mr XXXX there?"

I said "Hang on - I'll check for you.." and then just left them hanging on ( was actually having lunch so just carried on eating - just checked the phone every minute or so).

It was actually BT - who waited well over 10mins before hanging up.. :rotfl:

Thanks for the many ingenious and helpful replies. To answer the points together the routine is always "Can I speak to Clare somebody" The first time you are polite and say there is no one of that name when they launch into the sales spiel. What that is for I have no idea because I have never heard it through. It threw them for a while when I said "yes, speaking" but then they reverted to script. I have a really nice telephone number which I don't want to change and have printed stationery etc. Anyway, of course, I shouldn't need to as I am going to make them stop this illegal harassment. I used to do the junk mail sending back the post paid envelopes too and used to get loads from CapitalOne but not now. I have tried leaving the phone off the hook but they seem wise to this and hang up quite quickly - love the idea of the recorded messages asking for details.

I've only had one call so far today and also raised my blood pressure by ringing their "account manager" for the fifth time to tell them to stop. I asked for a senior person to make a complaint and was told you couldn't do this on the telephone!!!! Assured (as every previous time) it definitely would be stopped this time. Have complained again to Telephone Preference Service and Information Commissioner's Office.

So thanks to the good suggestions. Rather than having a nervous breakdown, I might as well have fun with these while complaining as often as it takes to Srini Gopalan, MD Europe and the official organisations

Why would they ring you for no genuine reason, i cannot get my head around what the deal is here. why not just let the phone ring simple as that..

Probably after "some suckers" to apply for their high percentage credit cards. Similar to when they kept sending it our persistently via Royal Mail.

but surely 1 phone call and 1 no answer would suffice. I don't understand why they would want to keep ringing if it was not to chase up a debt then whats it for?? why has the person not asked "may i ask what this is about". surely giving them 3 minutes of your time stops the calls full stop.

Well they were persistent via Royal Mail.
