I am never sure how much to feed my dog he is a medium size dog (springer spaniel ) i think i am feeding him to much .He is such a greedy dog and is just constantly asking for food .
How long should a 15kg dry food last me ? thats the biggest bags that you can get in dry food .

There should be a matrix on the back of the pack telling you how much to feed per day compared to the weight of your dog. Manufacturers usually overestimate anyway, so if you're feeding against the guideline on the pack then your dog should be getting enough.
Most dogs will try and convince you that they're starving when you know fine well they're being fed perfectly adequately. I think you just need to put your foot down0 -
thanks for the reply
I dont know how much he weighs so it means nothing to me when they say how much to feed in weight .The 15kg bag is lasting about a month does that sound about right ?0 -
If it was Skinners or Burns, a 25kg adult Springer would need about 315g per day (so 157.5g per meal fed twice).
A 15kg bag should therefore last around 47 days or just under 7 weeks.
Judge his shape/condition using this:

Our springer was being fed the recomended amount of a 15kg bag of Wainrights and it was lasting just over 6 weeks. We have just reduced her food a fair bit below that though as she was stacking weight on so i would think it will last about 2 months now. Our springer is a smallish springer and weighs 22kg. You can take them to your nearest vets to be wieghed. HTH0

I've got an ESS aged 3.5 and he only weighs 15kg
Vet is unconcerned with his weight and he doesn't look thin - just very lean and athletic.
So ..... individual dogs vary, even within the breed. Your ESS could weigh anything between 15 & 30 kg so I'm not sure that weight is a good way to judge the amount of food he should get.
Firstly - is he overweight? If you don't know, then take him to the vet and ask.
I know I can afford to feed mine up a bit (afford in the sense of giving him more food than the recommended amount), so I do. If I saw him overweight though, I'd be cutting back.
I don't think it's an exact science. In the same way as we need to vary the amount we eat, especially dependent on the amount of exercise we get, I think that same principle can be applied to dogs.
If you've always fed him when he's "asked" then don't assume he's genuinely hungry. To him, it's just a case of behaving in a certain way to get a reward. You should break this habit and get him into a firm feeding routine - either once or twice a day. And ignore the begging - either ignore it, or send him out to beg professionally :rotfl:Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

DENNIS -thanks for the link they were great,it showing that my springer may be alittle overweight .
Raggydoll-i feed mine on wainrights too ,ours is a smallish springer, hes a working springer so his build isnt as big as some springers anyway .Could i also ask you does your springer have a sensitve stomach ?we were adviced to feed him on dry food wainrights because wainrights have no wheat or gluten in ,our springer was needing to go outside as soon as he had eaten also he was going to the toilet 6-7 per day it turned out he has irritable bowl vet said it is common in springers .I dont know if its just our dog but he is 9 years old now and just as mad and giddy as the day we brought him home as a puppy .0 -
Carlos - weigh your dog
Either walk into the vets and ask to use their scales (free of charge) or use your one set and weight yourself, then weight yourself holding the dog and subtract your weight from the total
A 15kg bag of food will last my Large sized cocker 4 months - thats Aden Grange and a dog that gets around two hours runaround exercise a day0 -
Carlos - our springer is working type too. She doesn't have a sensitive stomach but our cocker puppy does. Wainrights isn't her favourite food but its the only one i'm happy to feed her that doesnt upset her she passes blood and mucus though on other food so more like colitis than IBS. We are pretty careful what we give both of them though.0

A 15kg bag lasts my three (a Springer, a Springer x BC and a Labradoodle whose = 2 of the little ones, so 4 little dogs) about a month.......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Higher quality foods will be more digestible and have a lower daily intake (and less waste!) than a cheaper, poorer quality food. You should always look at the feeding guide and then judge the body condition of your dog - not necessarily his/her weight. Your vet or vet nurse should be able to advise you on the body condition of your dog although charts are available.0
