More people are looking at prices now and so more are using the value ranges. So they've put the prices up so that they make the same or more profit than previously. Its what these companies do. Other options are to check out the price of these things in the discounters like Aldi / Lidl etc...

Personally its the pasta that annoys me. From 19p to 39p. My little one loves pasta and it was a cheap way of feeding us both at lunch time.

MrS did that too, the price went up to 8p then jumped upto 23p. I'm sure these places think we are idiots and won't notice. I know it's still cheap, but it's the principle of it. What I noticed yesterday was it's as cheap now to buy the normal shop brand as it is to buy the basic in lots of items. Maybe we should do that buy the normal shop brand and the basics might fall in price again as no-one is buying them, that's what they do in the US. I have an Aunt over there and she says that people frequently boycott certain items if the price goes up above what they think is reasonable and generally after a couple of weeks the price returns to what it was before. I think it's about time us Brits just stopped accepting things and take a stand, we are just far too polite even when we are being ripped off.
  • I'm not up on all this stuff but could there be a case for reporting this to the oft for price fixing I mean all the supermarkets can't just suddenly decide that a tin of tomatoes should cost 33p!!!!

Yes we have noticed this for a few weeks now - the Basics Digestives have gone up from 19p to 31p as well, when the choccy digestives are only 36p so it's a bit of a con if you ask us (and they are the nicest digestives anywhere :( ).

Whilst we accept that prices of basic food ingredients has gone up due to fuel increases and other things, it's the sheer size of the price increases in one go that has annoyed us, and appears to be prompted by no more than a much much higher % of people buying the Basics/Value/No Frills ranges than were before, therefore all the big supermarkets have to make their obscenely large profits somewhere, and therefore increased the prices that had little margin in them anyway.

My Mother was visiting last week, having not been back to the UK for nearly a year and said a) she couldn't believe how expensive everything was here now (she lives in Spain, which has had some steep price increases in things, but nowhere like here) and b) how the country has changed in the 4 years she hasn't lived here from a capitalist commercial country where people wanted to better themselves and have a good life to just all out greed and grabbing as much as humanly possible at every chance.

We can't wait to be able to afford to move to the countryside and start our path down self sufficiency...
Do not feed the trolls please.

Hi, has anyone else noticed how much value range food prices have increased at an alarming rate. I am a MrS shopper as I think their basic range is the best, but recently I have noticed that almost all of this range has increased in price. Some examples are:

Chopped tomatoes: 4 weeks ago 19p now 33p
Basic pasta: 4 weeks ago 18p now 38p
and the biggest increase of all; basic curry sauce: 4 weeks ago 4p today 23p (a massive 600% price increase)

I rang MrS today and was informed it was because the suppliers of their basic range have increased their prices and therefore, MrS have to pass the increase onto the customer, however, having read this this thread for a long time I know that this is bull !!!!!! as most of the normal suppliers supply the value range as well. I also pointed out that all their other own ranges had not increased in price only the basic ranges, and I told the very nice man that I did not believe that only the basic range suppliers had put their prices up, and that in my opinion MrS was profiting off peoples misfortune.

As I don't really shop anywhere else, is this just a MrS thing, or are all the other supermarkets doing this too? I personally think it is disgusting that companies like this are cashing in on this really bad time for many people.

Isn't it 'funny' how the pasta has doubled from 19p to 38p at ALL the major supermarkets at EXACTLY the same time isn't it.

And the thing is that wheat (which is all that pasta is) prices have more than HALVED since March this year so there can be absolutely no justification for these rises apart from pure profiteering.

Sainsbury's don't make any profit on their Basics range. Everything is sold at cost price, so any price increases will be because the suppliers have increased their prices.
