Hi, has anyone else noticed how much value range food prices have increased at an alarming rate. I am a MrS shopper as I think their basic range is the best, but recently I have noticed that almost all of this range has increased in price. Some examples are:
Chopped tomatoes: 4 weeks ago 19p now 33p
Basic pasta: 4 weeks ago 18p now 38p
and the biggest increase of all; basic curry sauce: 4 weeks ago 4p today 23p (a massive 600% price increase)
I rang MrS today and was informed it was because the suppliers of their basic range have increased their prices and therefore, MrS have to pass the increase onto the customer, however, having read this this thread for a long time I know that this is bull !!!!!! as most of the normal suppliers supply the value range as well. I also pointed out that all their other own ranges had not increased in price only the basic ranges, and I told the very nice man that I did not believe that only the basic range suppliers had put their prices up, and that in my opinion MrS was profiting off peoples misfortune.
As I don't really shop anywhere else, is this just a MrS thing, or are all the other supermarkets doing this too? I personally think it is disgusting that companies like this are cashing in on this really bad time for many people.

The one selling at 4p must have been a loss leader (selling something at a loss to get people in knowing the loss will easily be made up in most cases on all the other stuff people buy while they are there)"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."

Hi shezza,
As this is more of a shopping thread than Old Style, I've moved it over to the Shop but Don't drop board to see if you can get some replies from the experts there.

I think Tescos moved before Sainsburys on this, went into Tescos and noticed prices had gone up, thought "Gosh, better stock up in Sainsburys", then went to Sainsburys and they'd all gone up by the same amounts!

I was going to stock up but then the papers said food prices would be falling so I held off - big mistake!0 -
Look carefully at the labels on the shelves too. The other day I found in Mr S that a number of Organic items were only a penny or so more than their basic & "normal ranges" including- milk/ dog food/ chickpeas/ pasta shapes. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I noticed it too.
I stood for a good 10 minutes before a sales assistant asked me if I was alright... serioulsy.
I had been staring at the tins of tuna. I cannot get my head round the 50 to 100% increases since the last time I bought any.
And don't get me started on the other stuff....
Think it could be mainly tins and stuff that requires fuel to transport it- tins are heavy so this could be adding to costs. Added to that there has been increases in prices of metal. Maybe that as well has affected it all.
Though having said that. Tescos put up the hot chocolate by 50%.
Waitrose it is then...!0 -
Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury have all put up there chopped tomatoes to 33p if that isn't blatant price fixing then I don't know what is. What are they in Morrisons, Aldi or Netto anyone know, we use tons of the things.Nothing to see here, move along.0

I reckon the reasoning behind this is that loads more people have moved over to the basic brands (as we're all told that we have a credit crunch - you'd never have known it in Bluewater yesterday!) & that will seriously impact on their profits - something they will never allow!!
Perhaps we should all bring it to Watchdogs attention.0
