Dishwasher Salt or Ordiinary Salt?

  • in hard water areas, you still need the salt in the machine. everything comes out dull after a while if you dont use it.

I live in a v hard water area, so have to use salt, rinse aid etc, but I cut a lemon in half and put it on the top rack, face down and all the bits come out sparkling! Have done this for years, and my dishwasher is nearly 10 years old.

    What a good idea! :T
Bet it smells lovely too. I always link the smell of lemon with "clean and fresh". I'll try that.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

this thread reminds me that I need to find out more about the second hand dishwasher we "inherited" when we bought our house. It works a treat but I've never done anything with it apart from put powder/tablet in. Must find an instruction manual for it and figure out what else needs done regularly :)
  • i live in hardwater area, use to use proper d/washer salt,,but now bought a big bag (bout size of cement bag) tablets for water softners for £5 from costco works fine for me,,probly will last the life of the machine

God I go through a bag of DW salt at least one a week! This week Ive needed 2!

It sound like your machine is using masses of salt, we are in a hard water area and use the machine at least daily but a 1Kg bag seems to last quite a few weeks
Maybe you need to adjust the rate the machine uses salt to match the hardness of your water. To do this look at the local water board website to find out how hard your water is and have a read of the manual to see how you set it up.(on ours you switch on while holding a button etc...)
I would also check to see if the cap on the salt reservoir is sealed down tight so the stuff doesnt just wash away.

If of course you are being moneysaving and using the little bags you get with KFC please ignore me :).

  • Woo hoo. It worked! I have clean and sparkling dishes with minimal effort.

Many thanks to all for help and suggestions. I now have an excuse to have G+T using the other half of the lemon left over from putting half in the dishwasher.
