If im buying on ebay I always decide on the total price including postage.

I do not care what they charge for postage, if they want to keep their fees down by charging me more postage and the listing the item price less what difference does it make to me if im getting a good buy anyway.

Excessive postage threads are the new "who should leave feedback first" threads...

  • Agree Jennie, with the exception of listing and paypal fees, as buyers should not expect to have these costs passed on as P&P.
I actually think it's fair enough to include a proportion of Paypal fees in the p&p amount, since Paypal charge fees on it not just the item price, so it's a postal expense just as much as packaging materials are. In most cases the Paypal fees charged on the postage element of the total price will only be a small amount though: we're talking pence not pounds.

    Thats exactly what I mean:
If you sell items at 99p each, then ebay thake their 40p, for listing, then the 15p for the final listing fees, then paypal take a slice...

I am sorry to disagree with the poster about not passing on fees to bidders but at some point they will need to be paid by someone, and its unfair that the seller gets essentially nothing for selling, nothing to cover time or pictures or packaging or fees.

I think that its ebay that are unfair here, the fees are not only complex to work out, but high and really hit you in the wallet. Atleast when sellers list the fees, they are upfront and easy to see.
Like most ebay sellers say, if you don't like the fees, don't bid. No one is forcing you to bid.
Face the reality, fees do exist and are part of selling on ebay, thus I would totally agree that fees are part of the post and packaging
  • If you were adopting a businesslike approach to this, then you would include all fees ...... somewhere. Either in P&P or by setting a reserve/buy it now price.

No different to any other retailer, although I appreciate that a private seller who is decluttering is not comparable with a retailer. Nevertheless, I think we all use ebay to declutter as we intend to make a bit of cash - otherwise, stuff would just go in the bag and taken off to the charity shop

It really doesn't matter though whether post and packing is fair. Ebay have introduced a star system for p and p which doesn't ask how much was charged but asks the buyer for their personal and subjective view as to whether it was very good-right down to poor.

Whilst some buyer will mark down for excessive p and p any seller that uses p and p to cover alltheir costs is likely to suffer as once those stars drop below 4.4 visibility of their auctions becomes so low they might as well give up.

You do not cneed to convince anyone on here that charging an extra £4 for bus fairs is right or correct, we don't matter, all that matters is your buyer and if they think it is excessive and start to leave 3 or 4* then you might as well give up.

Powersellers need to be even more careful as low stars increase the FVFs they pay so excessive p and p will cost them money, not save it.

Likewise when doing an RM claim for lost items RM are in the habit of paying out only item cost and actual postage, so overcharging on p and p will cost a seller there as well as of course th ebuyer gets the full amount originally paid back.

    Yayyyyy:j
  • I agree with the above comments- that it is post and packing, and that it's best to include it in the price you're willing to pay, so if you're happy with price and £6 on top then it's still a good deal. :)

Personally I'm torn- if I see something with silly money in postage costs then I will quite often go for that one as I'll get less competition and often get a better overall price. I would still most likely leave a bad star rating though :o
Also I'd take into account if they were a regular or a occasional/new seller as they may've just made a stab in the dark postage estimate and got it wrong- I might still leave a low star on p+p but I wouldn't mention it in the feedback.

I'd never ask for a partial refund though- we had something turn up on friday that cost a couple of quid to post more than we paid- to me asking for a refund would be just as bad as if the seller asked us to pay a bit more.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

Ebay has brainwashed people into thinking that anyone who does not offer "free" postage or postage that exactly matches the value of the stamps is a theif.

Ebay wants everyone to offer "free" postage...

    And make Ebay more money...

Which is why postage is Ebay's new crusade.
