speed & ping!

at the moment we are on orange bb of 1 meg. if we change to 8meg will this improve my ping, as it fluctuates wildly all day & gaming is near impossible.

Comments

  • if you change to a decent ISP it will probably help more :( a fixed 1 meg line should be pretty much solid as a rock, distance willing, wildly fluctuating pings suggest packet loss, ie bad isp

thanks tony. my hubby said to say the speed & therefore the ping is very bad at peak times. this has only happened in the last month or so. we rang orange as we wanted to change etc offered us up to 8mb for less than we are paying now so we said ok subject to the speed increasing which it hasnt, so this backs up your answer really. looks like we will be checking out bb alternatives again. got any suggestions of a decent one?
  • you may now be tied to another 12 or 18 month long contract if you accepted a new deal :(
the speed can only increase if your line supports it, if you live a long way from the exchange speed will be limited, but peak time congestion is synonymous with poor quality and cheap ISPs, you generally (with a couple of notable exceptions) get what you pay for.
if you can find your router stats and post the sync speed, attenuation and snr, i/we may know more

edit...speed and ping are unrelated, it is quite possible to be a LPB on a fixed 512mbs connection, or have high pings on a fullsync 8 meg

.again thanks tony. well hopefully we are not tied to a new agreement as we stipulated & they told us they had made notes to the effect that we can cancel if the speed hasnt improved so hope they are true to their word!attenuation 25.0
    sync speed 1152kbps
snr? if this is db then its 31.1
originally thats what my hubby wondered -if speed & ping were related so you have cleared that up!
  • you look to be on a fixed 1 meg connection, the 31.1 I hope is the ATTn not the snr (more likely in the range 6-15), which would suggest you may achieve full sync on the max (up to 8 meg) product and even higher with sky/o2's LLU offering.
if you are not tied to a contract, check samknows to see if you have any decent LLU choices
