Processor Query

I've been looking at getting a laptop for my daughter and had decided to look for something with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2Ghz with 2gb ram but some I have seen have AMD processors and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to which AMD would be comparable to the Intel. I don't want to end up with something that is an AMD equivalent of the Cerelon! As usual the advice given in the stores is "it doesn't matter which processor it's the ram that's important"!

well 3200 AMDs are around 2.2 Ghz.
BUT, Intel have the better 'dual core' design setup (meaning that if you got a dual core intel 2.2 Ghz and an AMD dual core 2.2 Ghz, the Intel would be a mite faster (Probably equivalent to a 2.4 or 2.6 AMD))
Oddly, SINGLE chip AMDS completely outperform the Intels
heres the best I can find in comparing them ~

Thanks the test results will be really helpful. Just one thing that is confusing me though why does the Athlon not appear in Tom's chart for mobile CPU's as this was one of the ones the assistant was trying to push.0

Well for starters, Toms hardware is an American site. So its a fair chance they use slightly different codes etc to us
But other than that, theres SO many processors to choose from that they just happen to be the ones they benchmarked in THAT test.:idea:0 -
Tom does do an English site, although I am not sure how much of the content is UK specific.0

Thanks - that makes sense. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't the Cerelon equivalent or not really suited to laptops0

The AMD X2 are the dual core processors, just to give you a quick lookup when checking specs......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
..oh, and I found some of the Athlon mobiles listed, in the mid-range table...
..however, as a quick comparison, my desktop pc running a semperon 3000+ with 2GB RAM and XP is not twice as slow (if anything it's at least as fast if not faster) than my laptop running dual-core T2250 1.73 GHz, 2GB RAM and vista premium, yet in the tables the semperon scores 350-ish and the T2250 scores 800 !! So don't take them as gospel, it's an indication of the PROCESSOR's, not the complete pc's performance.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

The Athlons were primarily designed with Desktop use in mind, and later modified for mobile use. The Turions were, from the outset, mobile processors and can run with around half the power required by an Athlon, meaning longer battery life and lower heat emmissions.0
