Freeview reception?

  • I can't really believe people are still wanting to get Freeview or Freesat at the moment unless you have no decent terrestrial signal.
BBC and ITV are colaborating and setting up their own satellite system suposedly early in the new year, so if it were me I would wait before shelling out money on either of these.

PS Gizmo, I don't think you get the same channels on Freesat as you do on Freeview. I'm pretty sure E4 is one you don't get on Freesat.

The Maplin box should work with this service anyway (although the dish might need realigning if they decide to use a different satellite). Anyway, it will take time for them to do this, and the OP already has Sky installed and so he can switch to Freesat for nothing (or perhaps £20).

I did put "except E4" - perhaps it was an edit and you missed it. :)
  • Hi
You don't need to buy anything else, just cancel sky, just leave your card in your skybox, and with this you will get the freeview channels, like cbeebies

    Hope this helps
  • :doh:Sorry Gizmo, trying to read too fast.
  • Cheers for your advice guys....

So basically I can cancel my sky subscription(14 months) and keep my reciever, dish and card. So the card will receive c-beebies......
Don`t sky cancel ALL the channels then....

If thats the case you have saved me money.....

    BIG THANKS TO U ALL.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR

Spot On, and enjoy cbeebies and no sky don't cancel all the channels, the rest of the channels are freeview, you pay nothing for them.

No. Some of the channels are "free to air" - this means anyone with a satellite pointed at the satellite can receive them.

Some are "free to view" - these are broadcast with "encryption" and require a card (I believe your sky card will do this, although you may need to buy a £20 one as some others have said).

There is a list of free to air and free to view channels here:

Exactly right - if you pull out the card, you can see what you receive with a FreeSat card or a cancelled subscription card (you need to mentally add Channel 4, five & Sky 3 to the list).

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice
