ok have you tried jiggling the jack in the socket, if that works then possibly its a dodgy socket.

I did that and got buzzing noises from the speakers. I'm buying new ones tomorrow so hopefully i'll be able to tell you peeps it's now solved, fingers crossed :)
  • did you try the tip about the headphones, if you have plugged your monitor speaker in, and still get the same buzz, it's unlikely to be the speakers
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yeah the headphones don't work either.
  • no point buying any speakers then.. this is a problem further up the chain.. are you pushing the plugs home fully into the socket.

Yeah. When i twist them then i get buzzing and different sounds coming from them. When i push/twist the plugs in and out, i get buzzing noises.. It's like when you turn radio on and it's not tuned in properly, it's like the sound you get when not tuned in.
  • this is beginning to sound like a soundcard hardware problem, but it's difficult to be sure.. does it still do it without the microphone plugged in (causing feedback - a stab in the dark)

Yes but with the speakers plugged in.
  • could you switch the computer off at the mains, undo the case and see if the holes you are plugging the speakers into are soldered to the motherboard (the biggest circuit board), or into one of the smaller boards (that plug into slots on the motherboard)
