Is there seriously nothing "mainstream" on the market right now?
That passiv systems looks good but no indications of prices on their website. I'm sorely tempted to wire up some relays and somehow wire it up to my (always-on) fileserver either through serial or usb.0 -
Which ran an article on the PassiveSystems setup...

It's under the general topic of Home Automation.
You can go wild and wire up the whole house with gadgets.
Grand Design had an IT guy who had a rack full of Ethernet cables going everywhere.

"This can be done by acessing a PC or by using an iphone app. It also has the advanced feature of being able to contact you in the event that you leave something on after leaving your home"
Same site:
"Z-Wave HomePro Appliance Plug
This module plugs into your household wall socket and allows appliances or plug in lights to be switched using your Z-Wave controller. It can switch electrical equipment with a rating up to 10amps or 2300W."
You should think about other stuff you want to control,
and get an integrated system that can do them all.
You are only limited by your budget.0 -
Hi Guys, I am new to this, however, I was reading the message about controlling a ducted heating unit via SMS,
Well there is a unit that can do such a thing, it has relays as outputs to control Auxillary items via SMS. I had a friend that was into these sort of gadgets. and he introduced me to them and they work a treat, as long as you have Mobile Phone coverage at your home, it works well.0 -
Hi All,
Just spotted this and thought I would offer a solution. I found a product from RF Solutions which does exactly this. It's called a PROTEXT and I use it SMS my central heating boiler to interrupt the wiring to the Thermostat on my boiler. I then leave the heating switched on and set the stat to what I want the temperature to be.
With the PROTEXT in line with it, the thermostat is permanently disabled and so it can't "call" the boiler for heating, it is only allowed to "call" for heating when I text the PROTEXT and tell it to switch over and connect the stat again the stat.
It works really well at the moment (had some trouble using an Orange SIM card) but with Vodafone it works perfectly.
It cost me £125.00 plus £17 for a power supply and took about an hour to install.
I can't put a link in but if someone else can they are on rfsolutions.co.uk and you can search for PROTEXT from there I think.
They are still selling the PROTEXT on their website linked above.
All the best

SMS text? Somebody is still using MS-DOS command line interface, or UNIX C-shell out there.
It's probably alright to remember HEAT ON , HEAT OFF, but the command syntax can easily proliferate.
I certainly hope the future is devices on Power over Ethernet, and apps on iPhone and Android.0 -
Check out heatmiser they offer a Wifi stat which can be remotely accessed via internet or smart phone app. Think this might be what your looking for. heatmiserdotcodotuk0
