Any way to remote control central heating with SMS or Internet

Does anyone know of any methods of controlling the central heating, by either sending a text message from the mobile , or using an internet connection to turn it on.

I say this as i am back from work at random times, and i would want to turn the heating on for about 15-30 mins before i get back in the house..

Just thought it would be a good idea, but cant find anything like it.?

I'm sure the switches are available but don't buy them from suppliers who also stock bulk quantities of fertiliser and cotton wool or potassium salt.
  • lol, it does sound a bit suspect doesnt it,

as an alternative then, does anyone know how to control the central heating using a pc in the house, i cant really find anything like it on the net.
just wondered if anyone has done it.
  • I'd post in a PC forum, either on this site or somewhere like The Green Button or Hexus forums. There's loads of techie people doing all sorts with software there.

You can certainly get remote wireless room thermostats for CH so I guess if some software can replicate those signals/settings you could get something to work.

I very much doubt though that you'll find any easy solution!

Good afternoon: Viessmann have such a product for their range of boilers though the OH hasn't installed this type of controller yet.;)

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • If your boiler has a remote control panel or the terminals to connect one then this should be achievable. I'm about to give it a crack using an arduino board controlling two relays. I reckon one NC relay in series to open the circuit to the controller (turning the heating off) and one NO relay across the controller (turning the heating on).

The real reason is perhaps because I'd learn how to code the arduino server to present a secure iphone-formatted web page which toggles the outputs and maybe also monitors some inputs to show the state of the boiler.

£20 ish for the arduino and less than a fiver for the relays i reckon.

Are we going to see you on Dragons Den next series?
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
  • I know the perfect product - I have it installed in my house and in my holiday home. It works just as described. Look at smscentralheating.co.uk web site to see the product. It is also cheaper than some of the others I have looked at.

There is a new GSM-remote Control switch the GSM-AUTO that has 2 30 amp relays and you can set it to switch hot water and central heating on by just makig a simple phone call to the unit.
You can preprogramme the GSM-Remote-Control Swiching device for and period of time and it responds with a phone call and you do not need to text the unit.
The GSM-REMOTE-CONTROL device can be found by googling GSM-REMOTE-CONTROL-SWITCH

Does anyone else know anything about this company? No street address under their contact details, and the only phone number is a mobile...
Whois lookup gives an address in Nottingham.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
