upgrading speed of connection with wanadoo?

Wanadoo say my current broadband speed is 512k but I can upgrade to `up to 1Meg for a one off cost of £20`

Would this be worth it , will there will be a noticeable difference? We mainly use PC for surfing and downloading music.

cheers

I spotted a noticable difference when my connection was upgraded from 1Mbps to 2Mbps, so you may notice a difference as well. If it is a one-off cost of £20 and there is no additional cost to your monthly subscription, then I would recommend you go for the upgrade. You should notice a difference whilst surfing the net. :)
  • I'm on 2Mbit and YES you notice the difference, BUT only if the place where you are downloading the music from is using 1Mbit or higher speeds.

As tigermatt says, if its a one off fee of £20 then go for it, and web pages will load almost instantly.

Yes, as a general rule of thumb, you can only download at the speed of the slowest part of the connection. So, you could be connected to your ISP at 1Mbps, but if you the place you are downloading from are only connected to their ISP at 512Kbps, you will be downloading at 512Kbps.

Most places these days use ultra-fast connections (faster than Broadband) so you shouldn't have a problem. Just watch out when downloading from Asus, as I had to download a 6MB file from there at a speed of 20Kbps - a big difference to the usual 240Kbps!
  • One trick you can try is to phone up the Wanadoo customer line (instead of upgrading online). Provided you're outside of your contract period, and you play a good sob story about moving to a different Broadband provider (find one that's offering a cheaper deal), they should offer the upgrade free of charge.

£20 isn't a huge saving, but it'll fund a few glasses of wine/beer/spirits on a night out. Don't forget to toast Wanadoo for being generous if you succeed!

I would agree - phone them and threaten to move! I went for the £20 upgrade - to 2Meg - in (I think) October. In November Wanadoo contacted me offering me the upgrade for free - too late. I rang them to argue, but all they said was that the next time there was an upgrade I could have that for free.

Thanks for you advice I have save myself £20 as Wanadoo agreed to do it for nothing.

I even used a non 0870 number so saved on the call cost too! And they wished me a happy new year...so a big thumbs up to Wanadoo!!!

Hapy New Year everyone... I'm off to spend my saved £20 on some wine!!
