Buying a new car from Arnold Clark
I'm planning to buy a new car from Arnold Clark shortly, plucking up the courage to try and drive a hard bargain (pardon the pun). Anyone have experience of haggling with them and the likely outcome. Also paying cash, will this make a difference in my pursuit of extra stuff or money off?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

my advice is you should find a particular salesman you are happy dealing with.
I have had more luck with some of the smaller branches in the outskirts who are sometimes more personal. personality-match counts. Some arnold clark branches were bought over from other groups and have a terrible culture. others were always smaller and seem to be friendlier with better service.
timing matters- go for the end of month/quarter in the hopes they have a target to meet.
i have bought cars from them and always had sucess haggling.
if you are a bit cheeky and know what you want to pay it helps. (other quotes to show you have other options and have done your homework)
also, often they'd get to a point where they wouldn't go lower and then i'd get extras thrown in (petrol, mats etc).
Cash has never impressed them. they want to sell you finance. It does matter if you are trading something in. If so, always look for the price of the whole deal rather than which bit is trade-in and which 'discount'.0 -
Also paying cash
Not sure if that's beneficial any more, years ago it used to be a great teaser to get what one wanted, nowadays however, I doubt it's applicable any more.
The reason being, if you were having a car on finance, the garage / dealer / whoever, would be making a commission from the finance company, however, they may well be making a loss if you're paying by cash, just something for you to think about.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0 -
when i got my car from arnold clark last year the salesman told me it made no difference paying cash, they can haggle more when finance is involved0

I tried to buy a new car from them for the MIL last year. The salesman's famous quote was:- "We don't use APR figures when quoting finance".
Know your market know the cost of finance (eg via a bank loan) if required, know how much you can buy at it from a online site and then go in and haggle.
If you don't know these things then you haven't a clue whether you have got a good deal or not.0 -

Don't buy from Arnold Clark. Once they have your money they forget about you. Very poor customer service.

Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
Try Motorpoint.
You don't rely on any after-sales stuff from them.0 -
As long as you don't actually need finance from Arnold Clark, you should be ok... They won't budge much for cash and will bore you senseless when "running it (the deal) past their boss" I would take a card in with contact details so that if it drags on too long you can walk out and they can get back to you
Interestingly DH was mislead with regards to the finance... he went in quoting the 0%apr deal that Parks had offered us on a new car they quoted us 5% flat on ex demo... after he had part ex'd my car he was then given the finance agreement for the new car - which read 9.9%apr. He was on his own so signed the bloomin' thing. We did manage to use the "cooling off" period to change the finance but really didn't need the hassle.
I also seriously have my doubts about the servicing too... apparently at last service tyres were at 6mm when the 2 fronts had been replaced 2 weeks before  Makes you wonder...
We will never buy another car from them, if you choose to go in with your eyes wide open.0 -
Don't tell them your paying cash
Insinuate but dont state your interested in Finance, and only once you have the best deal you can get drop the bombshell its a cash sale0
