  • This would suggest that hardware on the network has been compromised .

I vaguely remember problems with Linksys routers and this type of attack.

    Try ubuntu?
Never get viruses, i don't even have an anti virus or anti spyware installed
  • You will need to reset your router - sorry I am not familiar with Linksys.

Do you have the setting your Isp sent you.

    1. Reset your router

    2. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #5 - Search and clean DNS Hijack by typing 5 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear.
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

    3. Now lets check some settings on your system.
    • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
    • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
    • Left click on Properties
    • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
    • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
    • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
    type
    ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

to access youe Router , open Internet explorer or Firefox

Once your web browser is open, go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password.

Logging in to a LinkSys Router
The username is either blank or "admin" and the default password is "admin".

To restore the router configuration to factory defaults, hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds.
Once your router is hard reset, you will need to login and reconfigure it again.
To reconfigure your LinkSys, connect a PC to one of it's Ethernet ports, load a web browser, and go to the URL http://192.168.1.1/. This will take you to a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login to your router (as above)

The reset button is on the back of your Linksys router, the small button that reads Reset

Further to the reset of the router

Make sure you set the WPA passkey so no one else can use it (I fear the problem may be it has no security set on it at the moment)

the suspicion is that the infection is in the router ,its possible in theory as most people do not change the default user id's and passwords

it's been shown that you could redirect eBay , for example , to a spoof site

    http://www.itwire.com/content/view/9633/53/

as most routers do not do forced firmware updates to close weaknesses

If the router had been compromised, then all the other users of it would get the same symptoms.

If - then you are right.

However if you check everything then you can rule that part out.
