Ridiculous that NPower can't tell you the times when you get cheap rate electric, Rich. Quite within your rights to take this further to EnergyWatch. Poor customer service by NPOwer - but, hey, nothing unusual in that!

It's not ridiculous. Your Distribution Company has the information on the times, not your Supplier.

  • We have Economy 10 through NPower and the times are as follows:

    Summer Months (now)

    2pm - 5pm
    9pm - 11pm
    1am - 6am

Winter Months (changes when clocks change)

    1pm - 4pm
    8pm - 10pm
    12am - 5am

You can hear your meter change from one tariff to another if you happen to be near it at the times shown on ours it shows a number 2 next to meter reading when on EC10 and a number 1 when on normal tariff.

    Hope this helps!

Can anyone answer my query on how economy 10 works if there isn't a thermostat or timer connected to the hot water tank? The water tank has two wires, each leading to a separate switch, which I have been advised should be kept switched on at all times in order to get cheap electricity. Eon changed my meter a couple of years ago, and since then, instead of having constantly heated water at a reasonable temperature, the water is extemely hot. I therefore only have it switched on at midnight, and turn it off when I wake up around 5am. Even so, the water is still far too hot. I asked Eon for the economy 10 times last week. They have me the winter times and didn't tell me that the timings were seasonal. What I was trying to find out from them was, is it the meter or the boiler that controls the timings, but I didn't get a definitive answer. I couldn't get to speak to an engineer (or someone in the know). I could only speak to the person who answered my call, which didn't fill me with confidence.

I've "bumped" this thread because I'm pretty sure that none of the answers given previously are correct - for the simple reason that the Economy 10 meter in my flat has THREE readings, not the single reading for "ordinary" tariffs, nor the two sets of readings for Economy 7 (one for standard rate, the other for off-peak rate).

If you have three readings your on a Heatwise/Comfort plus tariff, these tariffs have three reads as you only get the cheap rate for heating through the day.

Did they change the meter like for like? Your tank should have two wires, one for the immersion on the cheaper rate, the other for the immersion on the 24 hour rate. You should have a control panel that allows you to give a 'boost' supply should you need more hot water, if you have one check the settings on it, it may well be that this is the problem. It could also be that during the meter change the wiring got mixed up....highly unlikley, though possible if the meter was replaced with an item that works with differing timers than the original meter.

    Hi SanHur

I'm sorry the answer you received from us about Economy 10 times wasn't very clear.

Meter switching times vary across the country. They are set by the meter operators for the particular region concerned. As a rough guide, Economy 10 times are as follows.

5 hours between 2.30am and 7.30am - off peak rate for all usage.

2.5 hours between 1.30pm and 4pm - off peak rate for storage heating and/or hot water only.

2.5 hours between 10pm and 12.30am - off peak rate for storage heating and/or hot water only.

As I say, these times may vary around the country. The best way to find out the switching times for your particular set up is to talk to our metering people. Alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile. I will be happy to have a look for you. :)

The times are set via signals sent out from a regional transmitter. Once set, they will not be changed. There aren't any seasonal adjustments.

Hope this helps a little. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so.

The switching times vary between areas, it is not dependant upon what part of the country you live on.

Often, the switching times on 2 meters in houses on the same street can be different! I know this to be the case - I was a meter-reader until last year.

Also, the switching times with E10 meters do not move in line with when the clocks change. The switching times do move with E7 meters.

????? bit of a self contradicting statment there matt, the times are determined by the DNO and can vary from house to house in the same street, but will fall within a certain timeband.

The times will only move to/from BST if there is a teleswitch in the system....regardless of what tariff your on, and there are fewer teleswitches around than other means of switching. Should think this will change as more smart meters get fitted.
  • E10 and E7 are set completely different for every person. so whats for you and your next door neighbour could be completely different. There is a way to find out but tricky and the npower advisor will need to be a highly trained advisor who's been there for a number of years and worked in seveal departments.

You said you raised a complaint. call the complaints department and ask for the infomation that way. Ask that advisor to use a system called FMS to get the KEY for your times and then look that key up in database which will show your times.

    Hope this helps

Both meters had rate1, rate2, and stored tarrif. The new meter, I'm pretty certain also has a weekend tarrif. The tank does have two wires each leading to a separate switch on the inside of the cupboard. The boost is a switch on the outside of the cupboard. It doesn't have a control panel/dial, nothing - its just a switch. Eon suggested checking with the manufacturer of the tank when I asked whether the meter controlled the timings.

Thanks for the timings. Just to clarify, I'm to have both switches switched on at all times. The storage tank should automatically kick-in at the times given only, without me having to do anything?

I will do as you suggest, and send you email if I get no joy from the metering people.

Thanks for this. I will use this info also.

    Thanks again everyone. :A
Hopefully I should get this sorted once and for all.

    Hi SanHur

The times I quoted are just a rough guide to give you an idea.

You are doing the right thing in talking to our metering people as they are the best placed to give you more accurate info.

Please feel free to email me at any time if you still have queries. :)
