Economy 10 times + Npower

I have been for the last 3 months trying to get the peak/off peak times for E10 out of Npower it's taken phone calls and an official complaint but tonight I received this email

Anyone understand those figures. I thought you got 5 hours at night 02:30am-07:30am and then an afternoon boost and an evening boost but I didn't know the exact times which is why I was asking them.

So at the moment i'm still none the wiser :(

I think what it means . peak 24hrs. off peak heating which is turned on for 5hrs between midnight and 7am times to suit them and 2hrs between 1300 and 1700 hours to suit them....regards,,bri
  • I see what you're saying but Npower don't have any control over timings etc (so they tell me).

The whole point of having off peak though is you know when it is off peak, the times dont change so why can't they just say it comes on at xx time and off at xx time.

Honestly you would not believe how hard it has been to even get that out of them.

I think i'll make a complaint to energy watch now seems like it's going to be the only way to get the answer properly.

    Thanks for the reply
  • This was my understanding of how E10 works

    Day rate 05:00 to 13:00, 16:00 to 20:00 and 22:00 to 00:00

    Night rate is 00:00 to 05:00 13:00 to 16:00 and 20:00 to 22:00

All I wanted was confirmation from Npower whether this is roughly right so far i've had 3 different answers (including my original post above)

Are you The Doctor? You'll need more control over time than nPower have over the timings if you want to contact Energy Watch! (sorry about a fourth unhelpful answer)

If you PM me your MPAN I may be able to check you metering configuration. It will in part depend on which type of switching is in place (time swtich or radio teleswitch) because the latter varies.

  • I've "bumped" this thread because I'm pretty sure that none of the answers given previously are correct - for the simple reason that the Economy 10 meter in my flat has THREE readings, not the single reading for "ordinary" tariffs, nor the two sets of readings for Economy 7 (one for standard rate, the other for off-peak rate).

I'm the landlord, so don't pay the bills myself, but I remember that when we bought the flat there were only two or three utility providers who offered Economy 10 (the flat is in Birmingham).

And now, I'm after exactly the same information... what are the hours during which the various tariff rates apply?

What I done was upgrade my meter from E10 to E7, as then I can use any provider, I then transferred to EDF, as they worked out cheapest at the time.

  • Mine is a review of Economy 10.
After having Eco 7 for many years and always getting cold in the
evenings I eventually decided to look for different heating methods.
I knew about Eco 10 in the 1980's but never gave it much thought.
To cut a long story short...The bill for my electric last year was
£1400 for a one bedroom flat with all the mods...I decided to change
to Eco 10 to see if it would work out cheaper. We use all our
appliances in the off-peak rate now and have already saved over
£200 in the first 3 months of (winter period) use. So, in other
words it's very likey we will save about £500 this year on last year.
One other point is that the flat is now constant temperature around
    the clock.
What I am saying is to anyone whom uses a lot of electric on the
Eco 7 tariff and constantly cold in the evenings change to the
Eco 10 tariff and save £000's

Also Eco 10 comes in various times. Each company charges various rates. My company charges Eco 7 rate for Eco 10 hours Great eh!

Out of curiosity, if you have an Eco 7 meter how easy is it to switch to Eco 10?

Also, I hear they charge more per unit for Eco 10 then 7?

They may charge more on the expensive rate than with E7. However, you get an extra 3 hours worth of cheap rate usage. Plus, a common compaint with E7 heating systems is that the property gets cold in the evening (which is the expensive rate) so people may well have to put their heating on for a while at this time to stay warm. E10, by contrast, allows you to get an extra boost of heating at the cheap price.

I believe Eon offer E10 tariffs - but you have to have the correct wiring in your home. I know that many workers at the old Eastern Electricity swore by the tariff so that must say something - after all, they were in the know. Granted, things may have changed since then with the tariff structure, but even so....

Ridiculous that NPower can't tell you the times when you get cheap rate electric, Rich. Quite within your rights to take this further to EnergyWatch. Poor customer service by NPOwer - but, hey, nothing unusual in that!
