its the pin for the sim card, normally 4 digits, often set by the Network by default on a new sim (number will be in the little booklet with the sim card)
if you enter it wrong 10 times it locks out the sim card so be careful !!
if you contact your Network and tell them the problem they are they only people that can help you out of this one !
(this is not the security code for the phone, this is a 5 digit number)Ex forum ambassador

I think that the PIN has 4 numbers, but the PUK has 8. The PIN is entered when switching on, if the phone is set to require it. After a few unsuccessful goes, the PUK is needed to unblock the phone - this is where you are now.
Some SIM cards have the PIN and PUK codes written on the credit card size part of the SIM or the paperwork it was stuck to or came with. Otherwise you'll have to ask the network.
Once you've sorted this out, you might decide that entering the PIN every time is boring; the request can be switched off or you change the PIN from the phone menu, and needs the phone security code to do so - this is either set by default by the manufacturer, or you've entered a new one ........ too many numbers!
ps - some foreign SIMs use part of the PUK as a PIN for the answerphone0 -
Thanks, got the puk code from first 8 digits from number on card. Now it wants a new pin code. Have tried a new one, my old one and 0000, but it says incorrect each time and goes back to requiring the puk code. Shall I give up and try and get a bargain instead?0

I think - use the PUK to unblock the phone from the PIN confusion, then switch off the PIN code request (but I'm not sure from memory if this also needs the PIN!), using the security code, which has a default value in the phone manual (12345 for Nokia?).0
