Gluten free food hamper

Hello,

I'm thinking of making a food hamper for my mum for Christmas, but she has to have gluten free food and wondered if anyone knew any sites which had nice gluten free biscuits, chocolates or Christmassy things which I could include.

Thanks!

I did one last year. I bought most of the stuff from Waitrose, they had a lovely selection of Xmas gluten free stuff.
  • Try healthfood shops, they usually have lots of gluten free xmas stuff like mince pies and puddings etc.

The Village Bakery does quite a few gluten free things. http://www.village-bakery.com/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=10&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=45

I think I've tried most GF foods, and have to say there's some pretty naff stuff out there icon9.gif

But the ones that have been awesome and such a refreshing find are Village Bakery as somebody else said, Amaizin and Clive's Pies for more savoury products, TruFree products, No Wheat biscuits, and Honeybuns are absolutely GORGEOUS!

  • unfortunatly most gluten free products are revolting so its best to do your homework. my mum lives in dread of being given 'special' gluten free biccies etc. as she feels she has to sit and go 'mmm yummy' when she wants to gag!

Having sait that both marks and spencers and village bakery do ok GF mince pies, most GF xmas cakes are ok as they are naturally moist and she likes DS sunny chocolate wafers things with the oranges on the packet.
http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/422167_Dietary_Specials_Gluten_Free_Sunny_Wafers__100g.html you can also get in morrisons (not sure of the exact name). The mince pies cost a fortune but we get them in for a treat and they are nice hot.

see if you can find out what GF things she likes but wont buy as they are too dear (my friend was asking.....) might give you some more ideas of things she actually likes!

I'd also include some stuff in the hamper which is gluten free but for regular people too (such as chocolate, jam, coffee etc) so your guaranteed more success.

p.s. we also get Le Veneziane corn pasta which is the best we have found
p.p.s. how about popcorn? or Tamari (gluten free soy sauce wich tastes normal).
  • No gluten in wine, cheese, wine, oatcakes, wine ..................

Seriously tho' I've found Tesco and Sainsbury's to be really good at stocking GF foods all year round. Remember too that things like honey, smoked salmon, jars of olives, antipasto (mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes etc) can be expensive but are GF. If she likes cooking then a good cook book would be a brill idea. A selection of herbs and spices, potato flour (any health shop), coconut milk, block coconut and rice noodles can make a selection of sweet and savoury items. If she has a sweet tooth then chocolate, jam, fudge, tablet etc are all GF. If she prefers savoury then nuts, jars of salsa, ready salted crisps (for dipping into the salsa!) and rice cakes all fit the bill. Don't forget tea, coffee, (wine) too as they can also be expensive.

Hope these ideas help. I know they're not really Christmassy but if you wrap it in Santa paper and put on a bow then job done.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.

  • I agree with the honeybuns they are yummy I have only ever found them in big chain garden centers cafes though. We just got some lovely belgian truffles from M&S. Thorntons are usually good they will say on the back if they are gluten free. we like the chocolate gingers. Mrs crimbles are in most supermarkets the chocolate macaroons are great so moist and Something a bit cheaper is jb bunssink found in home bargains they due yog and choc coated rice cakes and macaroons.

We find morrisons is the best for glutin free food but then ours is a brand new store and has a big section. Good for xmas cakes (although i make my own as it's a bit pricey) and mince pies.

I don't agree that gf food can not be nice most of the foods we buy is no different in taste and we all eat the same as a family even though not all coeliac.

Don't get her anything with oats in most coeliacs can't actually have oats and barley .

eeek, not oatcakes -They are wheat free but contain gluten. Some lucky people can tolarate oats but the advice is to stay away from them if you have a gluten intolerance like coeliacs.
