ok, i rebooted went into advanced bios features and saw:-
    first boot device - floppy
swap floppy drive - was disabled so i changed it to enable
    then
gone into - my computer - device manager
this show - standard floppy disc controller

i'm not really very techie, so i dont know if this is helpful to anyone.

there is 2 years of warranty remaining, shall i just tell comet?

This doesnt really mean anything as just because its there
doesnt mean it is/isnt working it just means its connected.

I would remember to swap back the 1st bootable device to CD after tinkering
as if you wish to do a restore at any point you will want to boot from CD
  • thanks intel, our posts must have crossed, i did turn it on with floppy already in, it just never recognised it. i never got an error message.
and from what i understand from your post, bios doesnt show a: drive it just shows first boot device floppy, as i have stated above.
    Nice to save.

I would phone comet to see if its under warranty If it is go save yourself some money, and ask where it has to be taken to get done also ask if an engineer might come out as removing the case of your own machine may invalidate your warranty, they have those silvery void stickers on some cases
and well you know theses guys will do anything to get out of upholding
a warranty, so make sure first....
  • the only change i made in bios was swap floppy drive from disable to enable
should i swop this back again?
i dont like tinkering too much with computer, in case i do something wrong .
    Nice to save.

Yeah just swap it back, dont give the buggers any excuse.....mind you
if they did reject a warranty because of a drive change I would be astonished
its just better safe than sorry policy.
  • i,ve already had problems with comet about this.
on a previous occasion, when i took it in, the silver seal was intact, but when i took it home again it was not.
there was a dispute about this at the time as they did not beleive me.
anyway, i will contact them again and keep u informed of outcome.
    thanks

btw g,night, my oh hovering behind me , pointing at clock and fuming!
    Nice to save.

Take a photo of the seal and have it date and time stamped if possible on your own digital camer if you have one, say tomorrow then phone em up about 10mins afterward so everything is in order.....

If they had a look at PC before then it would be them who would of damaged seal beforehand and should of put a new seal in its place.
  • If it's going back to the suppliers, then fair enough, let them fix it. But, just to close off my previous advice, does the floppy drive appear in the 'drives' section of the BIOS setup? ('Standard CMOS setup' in AMIBIOSs, near the hard disks)
