depends on the age of the computer board, I've built computers in the past which have no USB but put them into cases which have USB on the case.
Sometimes, if they are not part of the motherboard they are built into the case and have cables which goto an "header" (various pins) on the motherboard.
If your mobo has addtional USB header then it can be just a case of connecting the cables from the case to it....you will need the mobo manual to ensure you have the correct oder to connect the cables thoughWelcome, rogerramjet.

Another thing to do is check device manager and see if they are available or if they are disabled in any way...look for a yellow circle with an exclemation mark in it.
If there is the exclemation mark, delete them and then restart, this can sometimes resolve the problemWelcome, rogerramjet.

hehe...everyone got to start somewhere
You just need to keep trying out things, just remember the worst you can do is corrupt the operating system and thats easily repairableWelcome, rogerramjet.

Humm....are the usb ports built into the board (on the rear where all the other cables go in) or on the case itself (on the front or side) if on the case there maybe the possibilty as you already mentioned that something has come loose. If on the board....HummmWelcome, rogerramjet.
