  • 6% lent in advances to churches and the rest seems to have been to various property developing schemes etc? Is that really in the true presbyterian ethos??

Ahhh - but it was all a big mistake. It wasnt really presbyterian - no idea how that got into the name. Nothing to do with the church dont you know - no idea how 6 of our ministers got on the board.

Anyway forget the £120,000,000 we (oops I mean they) seem to have temporarily mislead - anyone for a £1000 from our hardship fund just to show we care.

    Yours,

    PCI
  • Don't forget expat68 you have to be in "extreme hardship"

Not just a bit upset because you've lost your life savings!

Was at a meeting in our Church last night - just really going over the Administrator's Report and discussing the vote - people seemed annoyed but I suppose are just praying we will get help. I understand there are other meetings arranged.

It is so sad that no matter who you speak to on this - they all thought it was the CHURCH behind it.

Church House seems to say that its really nothing to do with them legally - but have you all thought - where are they going to get the money from? Whilst I fully agree they are linked and involved, I still believe Government is our only option.

Has Arlene Foster and Nigel Dodds signed yet????

We need all of the Congregations involved - whether as investors or borrowers to put the Petition to Downing Street on their Sunday Announcements sheet - that would be a help!

I think we need to get to near 10 000 signatures to be taken seriously!!!

I also understand the Hardship Fund is if you can't afford to pay for heat and light etc.

    Thoughts?

In answer to your question, how would the Church pay?

To quote David McNarry in post 368
"asked how the Church should find the money — which could amount to 25% of the total owed — he said: “I don’t care"

    And I don't care either!

It's time they faced up to their responsibilities instead of insulting people with offers of £1000, in cases of extreme hardship.

They are sitting on a general investment fund of £42 million!

They have countless big manses and land in attractive locations.

If the Government don't come up trumps, the PCI will have to!!

Look I agree with you - You so kindly drafted a petition to the Church in an earlier post and groovy-jon was going to set it up for us. Perhaps he has reasons at this stage not to do so - SO........................

I just think we need to focus our energies on as many signatures as possible on the Petition to Downing Street - We need to keep asking our First Minister, Arlene Foster and Nigel Dodds to keep working on this asap for us.

I have started to receive replies from MPs and they are saying that a meeting has been requested with Gordon Brown and our First Minister - and keep praying (if you have any left!)

A wee man on a bangkok side street just told me that the clerks from ALL presbyteries are meeting with the administrators tomorrow morning. Find out who your clerk is and email or call them with questions to be asked and a commitment for feedback to be given. Onwards and upwards.........

If anyone contacts their Presbytery clerk, they could ask who actually owns the churches and manses that make up the PCI. I have the idea from what was said at that meeting I went to in C'fergus, that the PCI does NOT own any of them but they belong to individual churches. So therefore don't think they would come into the equation if the PCI DID decide to help!!!
  • Evening All,
I’ve a few bits of news today:

Firstly, a reliable contact in the UUP has told me that the party leader has emailed all Council Group leaders today asking them to pass a motion asap on the Presbyterian Mutual Society. Group leaders are also asked to seek as much support from other party leaders. The gist of the motion is as follows:

The UUP will call upon the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown MP, to take immediate steps to ensure that members of and investors in the Presbyterian Mutual Society are covered by the same financial guarantee scheme as those savers with deposits in UK banks.

Secondly, I have also heard that a meeting of clerks is to be held tomorrow. If you can make contact with anyone at this meeting I would urge that you request them to discuss the following:

    1) The petition below is included in the Sunday morning announcements: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Save-the-Mutuals/[/font]
    2) To facilitate those who do not have an email address: would each clerk session ensure a written petition be made available in church this Sunday.

Also make clear it is imperative that it be this Sunday, there is no time to waste, as Arlene Foster is making an approach to the PM very soon.
I have already made contact with an individual who will be at this meeting, and these suggestions were well received. However it is important that all of you guys out there do the same – they all need to be singing from the same hymnbook!

Think you are right - each individual congregation is responsible for and own their own manse and church and hall etc and perhaps land.
