Buying meat from a local butcher is not guarantee that it'll be higher quality than that from a supermarket. They often buy their meats frozen from wholesalers with just as much injected water/gel as what you might find in some supermarket meat.

The same goes for things like sausages. I'd been buying mine from the local butcher assuming they were of a higher quality (they cost more afterall). It wasn't until seeing a programme on TV that was talking about injected water, pork content of sausages, etc that I asked him the pork content of his sausages - he didn't know. When I asked him to check, he went to the back of his shop, pulled out a cardboard box and came back with a shockingly low number. I stopped buying them.

Many butchers are suffering just like other retailers. They do what they can to reduce costs/increase profit. This includes buying their products as cheaply as possible. So always ask what it is you're buying. Don't assume as it's your local, high-street butcher it's all good stuff.

Sadly this is very true. You need to find a decent butcher - one who actually stores the carcass in the cold room and then butchers it himself. Too many "butchers" are just retailers for the same rubbish that the supermarkets sell, bought from the wholesaler.

My butcher cuts bacon to order, by hand!
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • i think its disgusting how we treat animals like a product and not a living thing, and how they are abused and modified for financial reasons. i personally havent eaten meat for a few years and have not suffered any health problems. if you told me 10 years ago that i'd end up being veggie then i'd never have believed it but its really not that hard!
  • "It's not just meat products - Tesco are busy diluting a whole load of products with water.

Amongst their latest wheezes are one litre cartons of "Orange Nectar" and "Apple Nectar", priced slightly cheaper than the 100% pure juices. For "Nectar" read "50% water, 50% juice". (Considerably more expensive, ml for ml, than the cartons of pure juice when you disregard the water content - so even if you love the taste of this so-called "Nectar" you'd be better off buying the pure juice and diluting it yourself).

Another one is their new "Sunflower Light" spread. They've taken all the existing ingredients from their usual Sunflower Margarine and blended them with 50% water! Half the calories, half the fat - because it's half water!"

Good point, what concerns me with all this added water is the extra weight and space required to transport it all. Which is worse for the environment. Surely concentrated versions of some products are better all round and each person can add the water themselves from their taps. For example I used to think fresh fruit juice was the better choice as it tastes slightly better, but when you consider the air miles the extra weight of transporting it then it makes some sense to concentrate it and rehydrate it once imported. Not that I really drink fruit juice anymore though, just an example.

    1pint of water weighs 1lb!

It weighs more. 1 pint is 568ml and a lb is 454g. With the density of water ratio at 1:1, 1 pint of water weighs 568g which is 1lb 4oz.
    .....

  • Freddie, its getting slightly irritating to read your constant quote of "muppet food".
I do not have to work 12 shifts at set times nor do I prostitute my wears to the highest bidder. Yes I work, but on my terms and I also do voluntary work in Youth and Child servcies (2-3 Nights a week). I also find time to cook decent food for my family.

Last night, I finished work at, went to the dentist. Had time to do 3 days worth of Tatties and mash, then cubs at 6, back home at 7.30, dishes done and sit down watch some football.

Tonight is a leaders meeting at 7, and perhaps if I am lucky a couple of beers afterwards. It is not all ablout muppet food, but finding time. Seems I can find plenty.

And like I said, who are you to judge that?

For the record, I have little time either and I find time to cook, however, if I choose to take my kids to Pizza Hut for a treat, or god forbid buy a tin of custard then thats my choice.
  • god forbid buy a tin of custard
Bet yous love my recipe for Steamed Chocolate Sponge to go with it though?
