The answer is to keep away from supermarket meats it may appear expensive using your local butcher but at least your paying for flesh and not water and air.

A lot of the "meat" be it bovine or poultry is administered narcotics such as "protein enhancers" prior to slaughter either in feed or by injection with larger beasts, coincidentally as a result water/fluid retention is enhanced by these chemicals, hence the many "no added water" labels you will see attached to these products, this term only applies post mortem and takes no account of the measures taken prior to slaughter to ensure an animals tissue is bloated. Our supermarkets are experts and packaging water and air and labelling it as "food".

Normally I do not buy supermarket meat. On this occasion I was tempted by the reduced price of the bacon. The cooking experience led me to question the health/morality of injecting water and heaven knows what else into it and other meats and whether supermarkets are making extra money by increasing the weight of the meat in this way.

Yes a whole shitload more than a local butcher would make on the same carcase, it's not like the old days where water would be vacuum pumped into the meat after slaughter it's far more subtle these days and happens prior to slaughter using chemicals.

1pint of water weighs 1lb! Supermarket prices can appear very tempting if you don't factor in all the garbage that is used to pad the weight of the product out.

    Too right.

It's not just meat products - Tesco are busy diluting a whole load of products with water.

Amongst their latest wheezes are one litre cartons of "Orange Nectar" and "Apple Nectar", priced slightly cheaper than the 100% pure juices. For "Nectar" read "50% water, 50% juice". (Considerably more expensive, ml for ml, than the cartons of pure juice when you disregard the water content - so even if you love the taste of this so-called "Nectar" you'd be better off buying the pure juice and diluting it yourself).

Another one is their new "Sunflower Light" spread. They've taken all the existing ingredients from their usual Sunflower Margarine and blended them with 50% water! Half the calories, half the fat - because it's half water!

  • The law regarding water content is a bit complex. There is the QUID declaration which covers the quantity of ingredients or group thereof in produce. Then there are weight issues for certain foods and on top of that general regulations on frozen foods - usually chickens. Believe me - it is complex!

My advice is to buy from someone you trust.

Freddie, its getting slightly irritating to read your constant quote of "muppet food". Just because a person buys something ready made or god forbid orders a take away after a 12 hour shift it does not make them a muppet. Twice today I have read the same comment from you, and frankly its rude.

Yes, this is a money saving site, but nowhere on here does it state you have to forego anything to be a member.
