it only becomes a crime under the theft act or fraud act if the person drives off without paying. Otherwise it's a civil debt.

    happens all the time

Dont forget to use 'mexican overdrive' as my American rellies call it......freewheeling wherever possible.
Some say it is not safe, but as long as you pay attention at all times its fine and DOES save fuel.
I drive HGVs and the most up to date ones disengage the drive when the onboard 'puter decides that its OK.
    :D:D stay wonky :D:D

I can't believe you're recommending this! It's essentially theft, since when the OP put the fuel in they would have had no intention of paying. You can't just 'borrow' fuel like this.

I did this once - a genuine accident though. They were fine about it - though it was a major retail supermarket so that might have helped. They just took my reg, asked for ID (I didn't have any except for one of my pre-printed bills), and asked when I would be paying. The next day I went in and paid. I don't think it would be such a great idea to do it intentionally though - especially as the extra £3 worth would cover the immediate needs.

Accidently, yes, that's fine, but on purpose? Morally, that's wrong.
  • Morally maybe, but we werent talking morally were we.

You're right 'we' weren't talking at all, I was responding to someone else's post.
  • OOO get you, the morally righteous!

I think you will find that we were talking as you couldnt believe I had 'recommended' it, even though I didnt 'recommend' anything. This was infact my last piece of advice after the others had been ruled out.
