diesel question?

Hi,
not sure if this is the right place to ask..

This week is extremely tight for me financially until i get paid on Friday. The thing is, i need to go to work tomorrow which is 11 miles there and back, then to see a friend which is another 3 miles or so there and back.. Now i only have 28-30 miles left of diesel but the clock keeps fluctuating on the dashboard thingy going up and down all the time.......do you think i'm safe to drive this car tomorrow, i would die if i ran out  I can't fill until Friday

Help!! I'm thinking about phoning in sick :o

is there anyone who you could carshare with, tell them you're having "car trouble" and won't be able to drive to work as car out of action........ not strictly untrue!

i suppose if you drove like a pensioner you just might make it.... keep revs low, make sure you're in the right gear....

is it going to be on busy roads? cause if you have to sit in traffic you will struggle.....

    what time of day?

Can friend not come to you, save 6 miles?
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

  • Is that 11 miles each way or 11 miles round trip?

It depends on how confident you are that there is 28-30 miles left in the tank. Ruuning out of diesel isnt as simple as with a petrol car. Running out of diesel can do damage to the diesel pump and they are expensive to replace.

Is it not possible to get a work mate to pick you up tomorrow? Tell them the car is going for MOT or something?

Its a bit of a risk!!!!
car shareing might be your best bet if you dont wont to take the risk. Or borrow the money off a neiguber or friend.

    Good luck
:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j
  • I would honestly search out any money that may be lurking - down the side of the sofa, coat/trouser pockets, whatever, as it's just too much of a pain if you don't make it, & as others have said, could cost you a whole lot more in the end.
    Sorry!!

yep, even if you can scrape together £3-4 quid that will double what's in your tank.....

Where in the country are you? is fuel a bit cheaper now? i'm getting unleaded for 94p a litre now...

Are you sure you can't find a pound or two? That would see you through. It's not worth the risk otherwise IMO. Also, will you not need to drive to work on friday, or will you have been paid by then?

  • Thanks for your replies..
Right i have £3.00 after going through my b/f pockets  but isn't it embarrassing putting in that amount?

    I can't car share unfortunately..

It's 11 miles there and back, then the rest afterwards..

I am thinking of going in then saying i've forgotten my purse, borrow a fiver from a freind then give it back the next day, is this awful?

    Or phone in sick!?

Well unless you know the person behind the counter I wouldn't care about being embarrassed. £3 should be good for another 25 miles. I really wouldn't chance it otherwise. A diesel pump replacement is expensive, I know from experience (though not from running out of fuel)!

Or borrow the £5 from your colleague if you prefer, but you honestly might regret runing your tank that low.

och the guy in the shop won't bat an eyelid!

just put the £3 in, and when you get to the counter say, "Omigod! i'm running on fumes here, was going to fill up and seem to have left my purse at home... this £3 was in the ashtray! oh my how embarrasing! but still better than nothing, at least i noticed before i put the fuel in"

and tra la la out the door.... he won't care!
