Which PS3?

Time for me to get some techy advice, rather than hand it out, so I'd appreciate if you could help me on this one..
Which PS3 should i get.
My mum and sister are clubbing together to get me a christmas present, and I really ain't fussed if it is brand new, or second hand. Now, do i go for the cost saving, and get a 40gb PS 3 from ebay, or consider gift vouchers, so i can get an 80gb brand new one from a retail store?
I've looked at the differences, I don't have any PS2 games, i already have an SACD player, and i have an ethernet connection (actually 2) where the PS3 will sit into my wired network. It is doubtful that I'll use it for gaming, but will be using it as a Video Streamer from my mac, and also playing BluRay Movies on my 1080p tv.
I'm leaning towards getting a decent 40gb one off ebay, but thought people who have used PS3's before, might be able to give me a bit of advice (that means you!)
Thanks in advance
M

I'd go for the cheaper 40Gb one. I have one and it's grand although I did buy it new last year. It'll do everything that you need it to do and you'll have some pennies to spare too. As far as I know there's no difference to the new ones apart from the larger HDD which is no great shakes.0

I would find it a much too hair-raising experience to buy something like a PS3 on eBay. You have much more faith in eBay than I do! 40GB will be fine if you aren't using it for games as that is what the drive is mainly used for.0

i got a 40gb ps3 last year, i think the only big difference except the hard drive size is the larger ones are backwards compatible but as you have no ps2 games thats irrelevant. mines is fine for all i use it for but thats just games and watching movies0

Are you sure the larger ones are backwards compatible? I believe it is only the original 60Gb units that can play PS2 games.
The word from inside Sony is that they decided the cost saving on the new non-compatible PS3's is enough that you can buy a new PS3 and a new PS2 for less than the original PS3 alone. This was just a rumour I heard not an official statement.
If you're not so trusting of e-bay then I'm sure you'll be able to find something more local.0 -
It is only the 60gb PS3 that will play PS2 games, neither the 40gb or 80gb will play them.0

I have the 60Gb one (Bought off ebay too
). If your not bothered about the PS2 playback then id recommend the 40Gb version and buy a bigger (laptop sized) hardrive for it (I have a 250 Gb in mine now) :idea:0 -
yeah.. i've worked out that the 60gb one, is backwards compatible, has 4usb, and has card readers and sacd... and is very expensive, they still go for loads..
also, i've noticed that at argos, and other retailers, the 40gb and the 80gb retails for the same price, so the only place i can really get a cheaper one, is from ebay...
i've been on ebay since 2001, so, i'm sure i can spot a good seller, compared to a bad seller..
thanks for your help!0 -
If you decide to get a bigger hardrive its dead easy to do. Just unscrew the old one and replace with the new.
HOWEVER
Id recommend doing it before you start saving games etc as otherwise if you dont 'back up' the old hardrive first you will lose all data
The only way of backing up is using an external FAT 32 formatted drive (Which are so rare I had to FORCE format mine!):idea:0 -
if the main desire surrounding getting a ps3 is to do with movies then i would go for one with the biggest hard drive just incase you decide you want to start saving movies onto it in the future.0

I heard that they were going to do one with a TV tuner built in. Now that would be nice!Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0
