Help With MP3 Player

How do I check if I am using Windows 98 Second Edition? Got the computer from a friend who was getting rid so dont have any disks, manuals etc. My 2 boys have MP3 players which use Win98 and they have been OK? Apparently its Sigmatel who supply the drive but their website just gives this info

Everytime I start up now I keep getting the message trying to locate W98eject.exe. Apparently this is needed to support the driver but I dont know where to get it from. When I look on my program files its there but when I click on it the folder is empty. When I try to install the driver again, even though it is already installed it does not seem to recognise this and reinstalls it again. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It seems to do this OK but the PC doesnt recognise it. Not sure what to do next.

I have 3 problems now with this

1. I keep getting the message trying to locate w98eject.exe every time I boot up - then it keeps searching and tells me it cant locate it.
2. If I try using Startup Mechanic the above message constantly pops up and even when I click OK or cancel it still keeps popping up. I then get a message run time error '13'
3. I have some programmes on the start up that I want to uninstall but I get a message saying incomplete - error and I cant get rid of them.
4. The pc keeps saying cannot locate driver when its installed and I can see it in the program files.
do you techies think the problem is with the USB as opposed to the driver? Thought Id start the day with a fresh mind but getting nowhere fast:mad:

There is definitely a problem with W98 and USB drives. You need to track down the W98 drivers for your player. Check the manual to see whether the player is compatible with W98. Did it come with a CD Rom? If so, the drivers would normally be on there. If not, there may be a website where you can down load the W98 drivers. Again, read the manual cover to cover, and google for the manufacturer of your player/ model number.
I've had this problem myself but managed to install the drivers. Good luck.

Yes I got a CD rom with the player. The manual is on this CD - there is not a hard copy but it also doesnt mention problem sorting. WHen I install the drivers it tells me successful but its obviously not as it doesnt work. The player is made by Logik but they dont appear to have a website (or ate least I cant find it) where I could perhaps download the drivers.

Have checked programme files and there is an icon for W98eject.exe but when I click on it nothing happens.

In your very first post you state that you have W98eject.exe on your system.

Using Explorer, find this file on your system and then put a copy in your

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, using file copy and file paste, which is where it should be.

do you have anti virus or ad aware? they may have removed this program and stored it in quarenteen as it may apeear as spyware.

it may be worth going onto the windows update website and seeing if you need to reinstall some files.

Do Start, Search, Find or whatever it is on WIN98 and search for the file W98eject.exe on your system.

Tried a search on my pc but I get the message nothing to view in this so I guess my PC cant find it either. Think I will dig out receipt and take it back - I give up! I still have the problems of the w98execut.exe pop up and startupmechanic but will post that separately now.
