Has anyone claimed this yet- if so how long did it take??
    Thanks Claire
  • It looks as though neither myself or husband received this. Do we write to our local tax office?

I just phoned them they says i got it in my allowance a few years back, ahh well was worth a bash, thanks anyway,
  • You can claim this allowance for the cost of an envelope and a stamp, and some time writing a brief letter.

Search for your tax office here:

What is the actual effect if you are entitled? It was a tax allowance, so would have reduced the tax paid and I guess you would get a rebate of the overpayment - but how much is that?

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

  • My husband phoned the tax office yesterday and has been told to write in to see if he is entitled, but he was also told there would be a deduction of £94 if he was.

    Hi Wendy

Whom did he call? I already am sure it wasnt the tax office. There is a company advertising they will help you get the tax claim but charge £94 for doing so. I think you'll find your husband called The Entitlements Agency Limited in cheshire. They are nothing to do with the inland revenue but people can get easily confused as thier stationary looks very much like the inland revenues.

Make sure it isnt them he is using - They will make you fill out whats known as a 64-8 form which authorises them to act on your behalf as your agent. Absolutely no need to do this as you can do it yourself if you use the claim form 11CTC.

If you claim directly via the inland revenue there shouldnt be any deduction, in fact they have to pay you interest on the amount unclaimed if you are entitled to it.

Check your hubbys P60 for the tax year ending 5th April 2003 - if his code ends in a H or T he has probably already had the allowance. Its too late now to claim for the tax year ending 5th April 2002 however.

Please make your claim directly with the Inland Revenue - I think the current website to get the form is http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/11ctc.pdf

The form is quite simple, just fill it in and send it to the tax office shown on the P60.

I should point out in fairness to the above named company they arent doing anything illegal or wrong by offerring this service - but why should you pay £94 for something you can do yourself for free! If you like you can send the £94 to me!!!!! lol

    Hope this helps.

I wasnt entitled to the rebate as I has a "T" tax code so had already had the allowance in my tax code - that was a shame. but Im glad to point anyone in the right direction as this website has helped me loads and loads!
  • Thanks Dual. I have asked my husband if he rang the number I gave him and his response was "err". I usually deal with things like this, in fact I deal with everything and then talk it through with dh so he understands in english. I left him to ring as I have been ill with flu this week so he now knows he cannot do without me. Nice to know I am needed.

    :D
  • Just spoken to HMRC. This allowance is means tested, and not eligble for anyone earning above 42K.
  • Hi Jambush. I think you have been mis-informed. It is the Child Tax Credit which is means tested, not the Childrens Tax Allowance.
