O2 Online Contract Haggling!

Options
I’m happy, after reading the haggling section of ‘The Money Diet’ I thought I would give O2 Online disconnections a quick call. I was currently on 100 cross network mins, 500 free texts and 1 MB GPRS paying £25 a month.
After some discussion, stating I had an email through telling me I was meant to be getting double text and minutes from October, the supervisor agreed to credit my account with half the call charges which didn’t fall into my free minutes (worked out to be £62).
I said I was still unhappy because Vodaphone online are offering 250 anytime mins and 1000 text for £25 a month.
I said O2 have always been good to me and I have no problem with the service, but if they couldn’t match this I would leave.

She went away for a while, came back and said they couldn’t match that price, but they could offer me 400 cross network mins, 1000 free text and 5 MB GPRS for £30 a month with £100 credited to my O2 account!

Yes this does tie me down to another 12 month contract, but all in all £162 credit takes down my monthly bill to £16.50 for the next 12 months!
So £16.50 for 400 cross network mins, 1000 text messages and 5MB GPRS.

Thanks Martin, saved myself a small fortune there!

Good result, you should of ask for a new phone aswell, maybe they wouldn't have given u a better deal but it is standard to get a new phone and maybe better tariff when your 12 months up.
  • The reason I didn’t ask for a new phone, is because I have always been a Sim free customer with them. Here is my reasoning for this:
I bought the Sony Ericsson P800 the day it was released 2-3 years ago on an orange contract. I took out the Link phone insurance, I pay £7 a month but that covers me for everything.
I have accidentally damaged phones beyond repair 3 times and lost the phone 2 times during this since I took out the cover 3 years ago! Every time instead of sending me a replacement hand-set they have sent me out Link/Currys/Comet gift vouchers to get a new handset. I could have spent them on other electrical goods, but have always ended up spending the vouchers on a phone.
Since the phone is usually valued at around £600 I have usually been given £600 in vouchers, which allows me to get an upgrade! I currently have a 2 month old Sony Ericsson P910 so really don’t need another phone! There’s nothing illegal in doing this, as I have genuinely lost me phone, or it has broken every time, but I have certainly benefited from the insurance.

One thing to remember with the O2 contract I got above, is to phone them up after the 12 months to see what else they can offer me if I decide to stay on
