broken fridge!

Hi, my fridge is now 1 and half yrs old and my fridge has stopped working but freezer is ok. Now i was thinking to go through home insurance but dont want to as my premium will go up. So i was thinking....
i rung Whirlpool and they said i could get a cover plan for breakdowns etc at £150 or at £15.00 per month, but i was wondering if i done this over the phone wheether i could let them take a few payments then cancel the direct debit/standing order thus cancel cover, but in meantime have my fridge fixed??
I did this when my boiler stopped working with british gas, to fix something really small.
Or would i be in some kind of contract where i would have to pay for a yr??? This is only done over the phone, they take bank details, nothing to sign and they would send someone round next day!
What do you think??

errr your fridge broke, get a new one! Get it on the never never, buy from from ebay! (i sold a perfectly good working one for £25 quid at the weekend, a couple of months payment on a warranty for a broken fridge!)
Why would i encourage you to swindle a company out of cash? Thats a very misguided version of being "MSE"0 -
Your home insurance wont cover you for mechanical breakdown of a fridge, thats not what its there for.
What you are suggesting is fraud if you plan to claim a repair off a policy for an existing problem. Worse still, you then plan to cancel the policy.
I find this behaviour quite astounding. People want to know where all the money banks lost has "dissapeared". Well believe it or not, banks lend to businesses too......they lose money when people do things like this......go figure.0 -
As it is a decent name, Whirlpool, go back to the RETAILER, (you have no contract with Whirlpool), and claim from them under the Sale of Goods Act, (SoGA), as not fit for purpose or of merchantable quality, it should last a lot longer than 18 months, just because the warranty has expired does not mean that the retailer has shrugged their responsibilities, a warranty is in addition to statutory rights, (SoGA), and cannot take them away.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0

I agree with derrick. Also gently let the retailer know that this course of action was suggested by Money Saving Expert and you are going to post the outcome on the site?
Don't pay extra for the retailer's cover as it is very expensive and things very rarely go wrong. OK, yours did but you'd have to be very unlucky for it to happen again!0 -
i will go back to retailer, my fridge was not a cheap one, and doubt i would find a decent fridge freezer for my needs for £25.00 it would be crap! Orginally i was thinking of claiming on my house insurance but am aware now that is isnt covered, i was posting on here for advice not a telling off. It wouldnt be fraud if you are not legally signed up to it, - that was the question

Thankyou for those who have nice advisory words and i am now going to go back to the retailer who sold me the fridge freezer in the first place. Its difficult when you buy extra insurance cause usually its lots of money or charge a mass call out fee which most cannot afford in these times.0 -
just for info, the company who offered the policy was whirlpool and they knew about the existing problem when advising me.0

IMHO, Whirlpool is NOT a decent name. Far from it, in fact, and something I have discovered to my cost.

Each to their own, our washing machine, fridge and 2 freezers have given no trouble in the 7 years owned.
All manufacturers of goods get good and bad reviews, I still say Whirlpool have a good reputation.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
