Hi all.

All of my icons are gone, .lnk extensions do not work and I can't even click on the filename.exe listed in explorer to run programs.

I tried the following solution found on this site to no avail:-
1. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC simultaneously and it will bring up Windows Task Manager

2. Click File menu and move the mouse cursor over to New Task (Run…)

3. Press and hold the CTRL button and click at the New Task (Run…)

4. Command prompt will appear.

5. Type assoc.exe=exefile and hit enter.
Any ideas please?

    I think you're on the right lines but it's probably a registry issue, download and unzip this file then double click on it to add the .lnk data to the registry then try opening links again.

    Hmm... slight problem there. My winzip is telling me it's unregistered and I can't open my email software (thunderbird) so that I can re-enter my details which I have carefully saved. Firefox is on the offered list of programs when "open" fails - but thunderbird isn't. Bum!

    Sheesh!

    Off to the winzip site to see if I can grab my info from them without needing email or to find an eval copy of any version greater than 12.0

    Otherwise I'll need to scout round for something that'll open zips...

    Can you create a new text file and save it as link.reg then copy and paste the text below into it and save it again, once you've done that just double click on the file to import into your registry:

    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk]
    @="lnkfile"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellNew]
    "Command"="C:\\WINDOWS\\rundll32.exe AppWiz.Cpl,NewLinkHere %2"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
    @="Shortcut"
    "EditFlags"=hex:01,00,00,00
    "IsShortcut"=""
    "NeverShowExt"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\CLSID]
    @="!!00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\IconHandler]
    @="!!00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\DropHandler]
    @="!!00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\!!00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    @=""

    This time it tries to open, but fails and offers to open it from a list. There's no regedit (type) program on the list.

    Browsed for regedit and ran it. Now to restart... I may be gone some time...

    Can you go to Start / Run and type in regedit ?

    If you can you could try manually entering the values

    I got it to run after browsing for regedit and adding it to the offered list of programs.

    Did a restart but I still have the same problem.

    I actually saved the winzip page with my registration info onto my desktop and it has saved properly there with the winzip folder and the page.htm icons and file extensions. I can't open my firefox directly but double clicking on the page icon then opens up firefox for me. So "new" associations are working - but all the old ones have completely gone.

    Fails to run.

    Microsoft kb923077 doesn't help either.

  • This is an outside shout and you have nothing to loose;

    Download Deckard's Association File Tool DAFT and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on it and clickRun.
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox
    • Click Save Log and save daft.txt
    • Then place a checkmark (tick) in the boxes in question.
    • Click the Fix button.
    • Copy and paste the content of daft.txt to your reply.
