gas meter

What do you do if you think your gas meter is under reading your useage.

Had the meter read by the gas company and they sent bill which was correct as per meter etc but it has to be either calculated wrong or the meters faulty.

how can i check before i pay for inspection of meter

live in a 4 bed with brand new heating system, trv, new pipework, cavity wall and loft insulation etc.

had brand new meter installed when did the heating and it came at 0.00 reading so cant be any mistakes on reading.

the meter serial is correct to serial number on bill

do you have any idea what i should potentially be paying.

if it is wrong how do they calculate actual useage.

No mention of consumption, so why do you think that it is reading incorrectly?

  • Robbo, if the meter is under reading, you are paying less than you should so why should you have to pay for the meter to be tested. I know that is the normal practice but I would think always for suspected over reading.
Depending on how you reply to espresso, if you/we still suspect under reading I would tell your supplier what you believe and let them sort it but maintain you will not pay.

I'm guessing that the OP now has a metric meter and previously had an imperial meter?

Wouldn't that mean he think that the meter meter was over-reading, not under-reading?

He would have been used to seeing it read 1 unit and now it would be reading 2.83 units?

    OP more info please!

Doesn't it depend if the OP is looking at the kWh on the bill or the units registered on the meter.

    Definitely more info needed.

The calculation you have given is for a metric meter i.e. 1 gas unit = 1 cubic metre = approx 11.5kWh

Older meters are Imperial and 1 gas unit = 100 cubic feet = approx 32.5kWh

i.e. an Imperial gas unit is 2.83 times bigger than a metric gas unit.

Look at your meter and it will have 'cu ft' on the dial if Imperial.

    thanks for replying

the meter is an actaris and it has m3 on the front

there are 5 black and 3 red dials showing 133 black 329 red

it also says 1 pulse =10dm3

    is this significant

have they read the meter or calculated the amount in correctly

    Robbomc,
It is a metric meter, so your 26 units = 297 kWh is correct.

About £20 or less a quarter - can't be bad!
  • cant be bad all right

    but can it be possible.

as i have said all the system is brand new but its a big system 17 rads towel rail, combi a rated, cavity wall etc

we dont use the heating much prob 4-5 hours a day

i want to beleive its right but i dont want a massive bill in the future if it aint.

    bit worried actually

i have looked at meter and it is brand new with the seal on the top and so what else to do.
