Mate, with respect, you've been offered a cheap unit, but you're clueless as to what to sell. DVD's and computer games are such a bad idea - there are far too many really big players at it.

You really need to sit back and decide what you're going to sell, how you're going to buy your stock, rates, electric, insurance, margins, etc THEN go looking for a unit to sell it from.

Believe me, there are no shortages of units out there - we're in a recession.

Also, bear in mind 50% of small businesses go under in the first two years - mostly owing tens of thousands - and they were started by people with what they believed was a good business idea - you havent even got that yet.

Sorry if all this sounds harsh, but opening a shop is hard work, long hours, very prone to failure and very likely to take you down for a serious amount of money while its at it.

Sell gothic clothing and jewellery - middle class kiddies are about the only people with cash to burn these days...

Does the o/p have a passion for this?
Does the o/p know anything about gothic clothing?
Does the o/p know anything about gothic jewellry?
Does the o/p know where to get either at trade prices?

Why don't you set up as an E-Bay seller, that way you don't have to buy any stock.

And what would an ebay seller sell if they didnt have any stock?

If you are an E-Bay seller the stock will be brought to you, people bring there stuff into your E-Bay shop, you ask them what's the least they will accept for it, you place it on E-Bay with the least amount as a reserve and you take a cut of the profit as well as a small fee for listing the item.

There are so many holes in that you could drive a bus through.

How about movie hampers - there's a thread on here somewhere. I did one for my son's 17th and it was a great success. You would need cheap but popular DVDs (play.com is great for these), bottles of coke/Fanta, popcorn and crisps, packed in a hamper. I used a real one but you could use a cheap box.

You could do these for about £5 if you keep them simple. Wrap in Xmas paper and cover with clingfilm or cellophane.

Doesn't really matter that much. I didn't read the OP like the guy was wanting to poor his heart and soul into this thing, just make a few quid from a cheap space.

It's not shockingly hard to find out places that sell stuff to trade, you call them up, then sell it.

Anyway, OP was asking for ideas/suggestions, not career advice...
  • When I used to live in the Midlands, our local market had a second hand book stall. They used to sell them for between 75p (paperback) and £3 (hardback) but there was a twist - once you had read your book, they would buy it back for a 25% of what you had paid for it. So say you bought 4 books at £1 each then took them back, you got £1 back towards your next book/s. It was the busiest stall on the market.

You could source books from charity shops, freecycle, school table top sales, jumble sales and friends and family to get you started.

Only an idea and if it's a bad one, please don't shout at me.
