Got a cheap shop for £35 a week all in without a lease!! But what can I sell?????

I have got a shop unit in my local market for £35 a week for all in including electric, if I want it that is. But.....I don't know what I could sell. There is no lease for the shop, only need to give 4 weeks notice if I wish to leave.

Anybody recommend anything I could sell?

  • at a fiver a day with 4 weeks notice, it sounds like a bargain... especially in run up to christmas! problem is if you rent it short term for a christmas stall, you could end up with a load of stock that is harder to shift for a profit after christmas, so might be better to think of a more long-term line of products
In the probably unlikely event that I actually post something of use to someone, an ickle vote of thanks would be much appreciated, in fact I might frame it and put it up on the wall next to my cycling proficiency certificate :D

exactly, what could I see that would be OK long term?

  • well you could sell pretty much anything (though in a market there may be some restrictions on the number of each type of retailer in order to keep a balance to the whole market - so that's something to check... otherwise the place would fill will people just selling sausages, for example!)

in credit crunch times people want bargains, naturally... but as a one man/woman band, it is very difficult to compete on price against the big boys...

i suppose first thing is to decide if you want to trade in new things or second-hand... both have pro's and con's...

new things easy to get from a wholesaler in never-ending supply, but equally other traders will have access to the same stock, so you won't be unique...

second-hand trading in a niche but busy market sector (say computer games, baby clothes, tools) can build you up a unique and loyal customer base, but you have to work harder to get the stock... and you can't be in a market 7 days a week selling, and also be out sourcing stock... perhaps the only logical way around that is to buy from online auctions, so the stock comes to you

... there's a few thoughts anyway, hope of some help!

  • Where can I find decent wholesalers of DVD's for example? And PC, Xbox, Wii games? If I could get them cheap then selling them wouldn't be too much of a problem around christmas time and after New Year as well.

Why don't you set up as an E-Bay seller, that way you don't have to buy any stock.
  • Yes but again, I ask WHERE DO I GET STOCK FROM??????????

I would say that the only real way to make money buying and selling is to buy and sell what you know.
    So, what do you know?
I'm guessing you're a 23 year old into Indie music.

Setting up a music shop could be very expensive but could you make a section of your shop a "rare indie music exchange"? - i.e. concentrating on an area that you know where you might be able to identify something's value and make a profit on it.

What else do you know about?
Can you, or anyone you know, make anything worth selling?

I know you are able to give 4 weeks notice, but does the same apply in terms of kicking you out? The problem you have is getting a load of stock (i.e. enough to fill a shop) but then not necessarily being around long enough to make that investment pay.

If you are an E-Bay seller the stock will be brought to you, people bring there stuff into your E-Bay shop, you ask them what's the least they will accept for it, you place it on E-Bay with the least amount as a reserve and you take a cut of the profit as well as a small fee for listing the item.
  • My friend no one can answer that for you, Seems like your all in the hype of its xmas its only 35£ a week rent, (not much of a bargain thats what small indoor markets go for in local towns,), i need something quick,
we dont know how much you got to spend on stock, what your into, you need to start brainstorming yourself, see what you come up with and work on it, no ones going to spoon feed you suppliers details, please dont say you dont expect that, when thats what your SHOUTING OUT,

as for the games, at 29£ for cod5 trade price and gow2 for 30£ (checked 5mins ago), thats just 2 titles your going to need more then that = alot of money, most of the high street stores are doing great offers at the moment,

if your talking about selling 2nd hand games/exchanges thats a different story, maywell work out in long run,

Do you have any stuff laying around that you could sell to get you started?
We, for example, could probably fill a small shop with second hand kids' clothes.
I guess I;m saying treat it a bit like a car boot sale for now.
