Deleted email recovery

gerbil, unfortunately I regularly empty the deleted folder - this is something unexpected cropped up that I want the email back for.
espresso, how do I view that dbx please? I think I've found it -it's about 473,000 kb so I assume there's a bit in it.0 -
Hi espresso I've downloaded oe viewer and moved the dbx into it from windows - not sure if this was right, i just fiddled around. There are a few randomly chosen emails there, is there a trick to bring them all up from a given date or choose by sender?
Cheers0 -
Am still trying - anyone?

The important thing is to make a safe copy of your Deleted Items.dbx file, not to compact the folders and close down OE. The viewer works fine for me here. I have just deleted an e-mail, copied the Deleted Items.dbx file and successfully viewed the deleted e-mail. You can sort the displayed e-mails by clicking on the Sender, Subject, Received, Size tabs at the top of the window. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks espresso. It is trial and error for me, i followed some old advice you gave someone a while back and hence got to the dbx thing, but it's only bringing back those messages currently stored in my 'undeleted' deleted box iyswim.
I don't understand why I can only see the last few as the box seems huge in comparison with the other boxes. ?
How would I compact the folder? Just to make sure I don't accidentally do it!0 -

If you are not seeing deleted items, then either the folder has already been compacted and the deleted e-mails lost or do you have the option "Empty messages from the deleted items from folder on exit" set? Tools, Options, Maintenance. Normally you are asked if you want to compact folders when closing OE after so many invocations of the program or File, Folder, Compact to do it manually. If you can't see the ones that you want with OEviewer, then they are gone! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
No, I have it set to empty manually, which I do quite regularly. I've never manually compacted a file - I don't even know what it means. I've just looked in tools, and see that it is set to 'compact when 20% wasted space' also, 'compact messages in background is ticked'! I guess that means everything has gone then?0

You could try recuva. No first hand experience of it but might be worth a look.

Yes sounds like they have gone for good. I did not remember about that option to compact automatically in the background as I don't use it. I have always been able to retrieve deleted messages from the dbx file, providing that it has not been compacted. Perhaps change your setting for the next time. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
