SIMPLE- which of these 4 x 32" HDTV's 4 my 360?

Started a new thread as my potentials have changed and thought it would be easier, have requested previous thread be closed because of this.

Basically, I have been looking for a 32 inch HD Ready TV for my bedroom- for main use to play XBOX 360 on. I also have a VCR/DVD Combi (which I rarely use) and Sky+ box in this bedroom also.

I have now whittled down my choices and it’s down to the below. I would appreciate some advice on which would be best.

I should note that I have played the xbox 360 on the 2nd tv noted above (Samsung LE32M87BD) and it looks and plays perfectly…I guess from my side of things, I’m just a little worried about getting any tv other than this- such as one with 1080, in case it doesn’t look as sharp or play as smoothly. But then the specs on the Samsung LE32M87BD compared to the rest noted are poor, so the rest should make it look even better right?

The guy in JL said if you have a 1080 tele, then you don’t need the 100Hz the 720 offers

Any advice? Not fussed on poor sound, more worried about picture quality and frame rate on x360.

The Panasonic Viera TX32LZD80 is £605 at Richer Sounds with 5 year warranty. Or have a look at the Panasonic TX32LMD70 at only £385 with 5 yr warranty. I have the latter; it's a Which? Best Buy and a cracking set.

My son has the TX32LMD70 and uses it with his PS3; can't fault it.

Toss up between the Sony and the Pan'.

Your looking into the 'specs' which is really what you SHOULDNT do. Just read reviews on them. The specs mean nothing as theyre mosly BS, and DONT take into account ACTUAL picture quality (Which is 'surely' the most important thing when deciding a tv?)
The other main one is the connections needed. I would recommened at LEAST 2 hdmis in this day and age, and enough scarts etc to use whatever equipment you have now.

Samsung LE32A558P3FX then Panasonic. Ignore the others as they're not 1080p.

Ignore the brightness rating - you'll not ever need to set it to anywhere near the highest levels of even the lowest. Ignore the response time. It's a "marketbollox" figure as it only measures the time it takes a pixel to go fully on to fully off, not to partial states which takes longer and which they're more likely to be in. You will find it very hard to buy a panel not fast enough unless it's a bargain basement no-name from Woolies.

Who do you know that can tell the difference between a 720P 32" screen and a 1080P 32" screen? The screens not big enough to matter.

  • The pansonic is probably the best of the Tv's, though you could go as far as the LZD85, but if it's going to be your second tv then maybe go for the Samsung. If it's for your xbox then getting 1080p may not be as important as 100hz.

I have the sony 40v4000u, and its a great piece of kit for less than £600 - no ghosting/tearing and works fine when gaming, much preferred it to a similar priced samsung. The panny looked gorgeous, but was way out of my price range.

Any particular reason why the Sony is so cheap?
I do like the overall audio and video package that Sony provides, and I have a Trinitron TV and PC monitor. I've not realy looked at the TFT's yet. But it would be my personal choice. So long as I can plug my PC into it, thats all that matters, and the price is right....

The Panasonic LZ85 is superb for both gaming/HDTV, and normal (SD) TV and DVD's (it's the set i've got).

The Samsungs are good sets for HD, but i'm not sure about SD (when I was looking at the LCD's the Samsungs looked slightly worse than the equivilent Panasonics for SD feeds).

Basically any modern brand name LCD should be ok for gaming (the most expensive LCD sets from the launch of 360 would be entry level spec now), so you can probably put that to the side, and concentrate a bit on how the set will do anything else you want it to (TV/SD etc), and the connections - iirc the samsungs tend to have 4 hdmi, whilst the panny's have 3.

It's also worth remembering that if you have a John Lewis near you, you can get them to price match to other local stores (they price matched my set against the local Comet store, saving me £100).

Tom, I suspect the Sony is their cheap entry level model - i know some of their sets are made with older display panels.
