Failed Credit Card Application

Hi
I dont know if this is the correct forum, please feel free to move as necessary:- my daughter wanted to purchase some clothing from Topshop and was offered 15% discount if she opened an account. She already had a dormant one!

On completion of the paperwork her application was declined and GE refused to speak to her about it. She has recently started full time employment from being a student and has her salary paid into her bank account, and only has a small overdraft which she is paying off interest free and student loan. No other debts!!

This will be a blot on her credit rating, we are sure, but what can we do to investigate why it happened and to remove this declined credit on her credit rating?

The 15% discount is for new customers only, not for current account holders.

Like most other store/credit cards, only 1 account is permitted per customer, hence being declined. There are limited exceptions to this rule elsewhere.

I don't really think it needs investigating and it was perhaps a tad naive to try and open an additional account. Did she tell the C/S agent in the store at the time of application that she already had an account ?

It won't necessarily have an effect on her rating as GE would have immediately seen she already had an account and may not have actually performed a credit check on her and recorded any search.

That is clear...your daughter was stupid in applying for something she already had. Don't go blaming the company...your post spells out it was your daughters fault.

Additionally, I'd love to know how you managed to cut and paste the offline/online thing, the report post icon, and the edit post icon.

Seems that two people here don't know what they're doing.

Lenders do not report 'declined credit' to the credit reference agencies. At worst her file will show a search undertaken by a lender she already has an account with.
  • But harsh jumping in like that isn't it?

How long was the account dormant? In the past Arcadia stores have allowed you to 'reactivate' your account if its not been used for 3 months and still get the introductory offer, I know this because I have done it in the past with an Evans store card. I had to fill in the paperwork and they ran a credit check once again.

So jumping in saying the OPs daughter is stupid isn't really fair if the same thing was offered to her.

Lenders' names are not given to other lenders searching your file.
  • Well thank you for the lectures yes she did inform them that she had an old account, and she was offered it as a new customer as they informed her she neednt worry about the old account.

If everyone was completely savvy about everything then there would be absolutely no need for forums like this....You know its a case of 'the know it alls' making it impossible for those that dont know as much to ask a simple question, bit like bullies really..

Daveboy thank you for your comments particularly, people actually do come on here to learn certain things, its clear you need to learn something yourself, see if you can work it out.....

If you don't want opinions then don't come on a public forum asking questions !

Just because you don't like the answers given or opinions expressed, it does not make them wrong.

Certain questions were asked to establish the facts, rather than assume as the product could have been mis-sold ! Either way she has nothing to worry about.
  • When I worked for Arcadia (5yrs ago) we were trained to ask people who had "old" versions of our cards when they had last used them, and if it was over 6 months ago we would encourage them to open a new one as the old one would be dormant and they would benefit from opening discount, and store would have another account opening towards their target.

  • whilst I would really like to thank you, what is more than irritating is your superior tone..climb down and be a mere mortal, you never know I maybe able to help you one day, and I do hope I can do it without a sanctimonious tone....

I dont come for criticism, I come for help, shame on me
