Data transfer problem

Ok, I wish I hadn't done it now, but I got PC World to transfer the data from my old, defunct PC onto the new one, as there was all my college work, phots and music on there. I had viewed all the files on the hard drive via an adaptor on my laptop so I knew the stuff was all there. Anyway, I get home with new pC and everything I want is NOT there, the stuff saved on the new PC is old.
I went back in today, the guy was insistent he'd saved everything, but I know he can't have because I accessed a few files using the adaptor last week! I just didn't have the patience to go through everything.
So, what can I do? They still have my hard drive, but I think I'll just get it back, as I know my stuff is all on there. Thing is, I don't know anyone who could do it for me, but there's a lot of photos I never got round to backing up (that'll teach me:eek: )
Many thanks.

Perplexed. What is that 'adaptor' you use with the laptop? Can you use it on your new PC? Otherwise, just a get a USB enclosure for your old hard disk, attach to the new PC and drag and drop your files. Once that's done, reformat the disk and use as a backup device for your new PC.

The adaptor was something some kind person on here showed me! My dad just took the hard drive out of the old PC and connected it to my laptop via USB port. I had problems getting to a lot of files as it said I wasn't authorised, so had to take ages changing all the properties, I'm not wonderfully technical either so was a long process. I think I will get that hard drive back from d@mn PC world. It's frustrating as I know the data is there, so why does that guy seem so sure he's done it all?!
When I plugged the hard drive in to the laptop it came up on the laptop as 2 different external drives and this chap has only saved 1 - I told him this but no, he said he did it all.

And I'm afraid I don't know how to get a USB enclosure...and don't know how to reformat! SOrry, but you're talking to someone with basic PC knowledge!!!!
Thanks for the help, will look into it:p

Making allowing for the PC World peeps to be useless prats, it may be that that files on your old PC are encrypted or secured in some way. So the numpties at PC World wouldn't be able to copy them to your new PC using their minimal skills.

you can take ownership of all files with a couple of clicks.

  • Hi,
I think I'll trek back to that d@mn shop tomorrow and take my hard drive away, not sure now why I left it, he asked if I wanted him to dispose of it! It is still there luckily, I saw it today.
I managed to save a few of the essential files I needed by taking ownership of them as someone has mentioned - but it was laborious, I couldn't save a folder and it's contents, only individual files. But, I'd rather have my hard drive back and do them all that way than nothing!
And to top it all off....poxy PC World charge £30 for the data transfer, which isn't even complete - I think I'll email head office and complain about that!

Thank you very much for replying, but how would I do that? Sorry for all the questions, would love to be more PC-savvy;)

  • Just to update this - I went into the awful place today to get hard drive back - at first he said it had gone! But he looked again and oh there it was... He connected it to their computer and asked me to show him where all the stuff was...which I promptly did, easy!! 'Oh I missed that -your system's so corrupt it shouldn't be in that folder' were his words:mad: So, 2 hours later and I have it all on discs...I've checked it all and I have everything I wanted...shame it took so long. And I was made to feel like an inconvenience to him, I could tell he was thoroughly fed up with me...but do I care?! I have my photos, documents so I don't care!!

    Lesson learned though......!!!;)
