Internet phone & Mobile bband

Hello

I'm moving into a rented apartment that has no BT socket.

Trying to figure out a way of avoiding a hefty BT installation fee whilst having internet access, and using the net for phone calls.

Essentially I need to make international calls cheaply, and via the internet would be great. Ideally by some kind of internet phone hand set. Has anyone got any experience of these, and how they work?

One way would be to see if Virgin could install their cable bband without the need for a BT line.

Another way would to get mobile bband, but I am wary of how reliable this would be, and conscious of going over my allowance with lenghty phone calls.

My internet use is only light - maybe max i hr a day just browsing, and no downloading.

Anyone any suggestions on the above - Virgin cable or mobile bband. Or am i simply going to have to bite the bullet and get a landline installed along with with the installation fee and ongoing monthly line rental.

Cheers

use Skype for international calls, you don't need a special handset - just a microphone and use it with your computer/laptop

I have a contract with t-mobile for my mobile calls, they recently sent me an sms saying i could connect my phone to my PC and use it for internet, but i'm guessing this isnt going to be the cheapest option.

If you get cable, you could use skype to call people for free if they have skype, but you would still have to pay to call mobiles and landlines.

IMO if your considering either a mobile broadband OR a virgin contract, virgin would be better value for money, as mobile broadband isnt cheap at all!

Virgin 2mb broadband is £10 for 6months, then £17 thereafter, unlimited whilst three mobile broadband is £10 per month with a 1gb limit and £15 for 3gb.

However, virgin is £4.50 for the first 6months and then £9 after if you have a phone line at £11 line rental, thats only a £2 difference.

If you do join virgin don't forget to check out the referals board to grab yourself a refer a friend £30 bonus.
