Orange Broadband - stuck because didn't opt out

For many years I used Orange's Anytime dial up internet access (through all its many incarnations, Freeserve, Wanadoo etc) and as of around December last year, this was automatically upgraded to Orange Broadband and the dial-up service discontinued. I was away from home at the time and did not receive any notification of this in the October prior, as Orange claim I should have, I then returned in December to find a modem in the post. I am now stuck with Orange Broadband because I didn't select to "opt out" and I'm tied to an 18-month contract. I have never signed anything to agree to this contract or to agree to payments being taken from my account and I have never used, let alone installed, the broadband. Is this legal for Orange to do this? I have struggled for almost a year now to talk to anyone at Orange about this, they simply claim that I must pay the outstanding amount of the contract in order to cancel if I can't prove that I was away at the time of the change and didn't receive notification of the opt in/out clause. Surely I can't be the only person in this situation? I am paying hundreds of pounds for a service I'm not using and am unable to cancel. Help!

This doesn't sound right to me.
The best thing would be to call consumer advice and find out your legal rights, they take notes of your call, so if you cannot sort it out yourself, they can call orange on your behalf.

Thanks! I've contacted them and I'm waiting to hear back. I'm just surprised more people haven't found themselves in the same situation, I can't find a single other person. But thanks again for the help.
