Full time mum - Jury service!

Hi all,

I start my jury service in two weeks time and they have told me i can claim for someone to look after my two little children (DD4) and (DS1) whilst i attend the court.

I phoned them and they confirmed that i could claim for a relative to look after my children and i need to get a letter from the relative to say how much i am paying them.

Just wondered if anyone has been in s similar position and how much did you claim for a relative looking after your children???

thanks in advance

Surely it comes down to how much you're ACTUALLY paying them. I expect if you claim too much they'll knock it down to the appropriate amount.
  • Hi, i would be in the same situation if I called for jury service and I would be as confused as you. I would ask my friends that have their lo's in local nurseries full time what they pay a week and use that as a guide - as that is the sort of amount people must claim at your local court.
I would also give all or atleast some of the money you claim to the relative ;)

I would say this is good advice - a nursery is approx $30 ish a day depending on where you live and I think childminders in my area charge 3.50 per hour so you could use that as a guide?

I'd go with the going rate for a childminder.

I'd have thought childminder prices would be closer to what they will pay.

This is interesting as I have to do mine next summer (middle of the school holidays) because I deferred and now cannot change it again. Anyway, my LO is school-age and we don't use holiday childcare so, tbh, I've been wondering what I am going to do with her! I hadn't realised we can use family.

The problem with it is we don't know how long we may have to do it, do we? So if I was to book two weeks of holiday club and then it went on for four weeks...? Or if I booked two weeks and ended up not doing it (DH was told a few days before that he wasn't needed at all), or only doing two days...

I could be landed with a huge bill for something I wouldn't normally use, or no childcare as I wouldn't have booked it in time, as I see it?

I may be missing the point here but isn't the op asking what the going rate is for childcare not how much she's trying to make for herself:confused: ?? She never mentions not giving the relative the money so I'm surprised to see people jumping on this telling her to give all or some of the money to that person!

Come on people, lets just answer the original question and not attack the person asking it!

Btw, I used to pay £22.50 per day for private nursery but that was 4 years ago so not sure how accurate that is now!

I thought it was money saving diva that is getting 'attacked' here for what I'd assumed (rightly or wrongly was a tongue in cheek type comment) not the op
I expect the OP is wishing she hadn't asked! :rotfl:

Noone has attacked the OP, just the poster who said she should give at least some of the money to the relative.

i know there is an allowance for lost wages for jury service and that there is an upper limit. Maybe the poster should ask if there is an upper limit
    on child care costs.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
