Baby Items: Sell, Keep or Give Away?

Sorry me again:p

Just out of curiosity really, but what have you done/intend to do with your used baby things?

My DD is only 8/9mths and I already have 4 black sacks full of clothes. I was keeping them as we were going to try for another quite soon but now we're waiting/ debating whether to have another. It seems a shame for them to be sat in the loft. If we have a boy next or a summer baby they'll be no good anyway. BUT if I have a winter girl I'll be kicking myself if I sell them.

I'm so tempted to get up in the loft and whack them all on Ebay and clear off a bit of my debt!

What has everyone else done?

  • Hiya,

My eldest dd is 4. We sold anything that was girly or coloured and between the ages of birth to about 2. I figured that I could always use the white vests, bodysuits, sleepsuits etc for either boy or girl and no matter what time of year.
We decided to keep her clothes after 2 as they don't tend to grow as fast. We kept t-shirts, jumpers, pants but nothing seasonal.
As it happened we had another dd but a spring one, so didn't expect any of the clothes to fit, but she was a big baby and most did.
Am so glad I kept them as you don't get as many clothes gifts with your second and the girls both use the smaller stuff on their dolls now.

I sorted my clothes into boys and neutral. When I had a girl I gave my boy stuff away. Mine were both born in March, so I never gave a thought to different season stuff. I'd do what the above poster says sort into 'anytime of year neutrals' 'winter neutrals' and 'girls' and keep until you know.

I've got all my three-year-old's stuff in the loft. WE are trying for another one and so of course he/she will get to reuse any good stuff. I plan to keep a few pieces for posterity, that make me go 'aaaaahhhh' when i get them out, but will gradually eBay the rest over the years as our second one grows out of them.

I have a feelin also that some of the stuff I've save will be far too manky to give to another baby, but I can never bear to get rid of any baby stuff at the time!

I've kept far too much to be honest.
My daughter is 2 and a half and I've kept anything that is in ok condition. Also a pink highchair, loads of toys, pram, car seats etc!
The worst thing is that I'm not having anymore children in the foreseeable future and knowing my luck I'll have a boy when I do!

The sensible thing would to have kept just a few things, especially the neutral colours.
  • I kwpt all the basics and then sold bits that I didn't love at NCT nearly new sales and seemed much more successful at these than selling on ebay. It was a bit easier too and I was able to pick up all the next sized clothes there for next to nothing!
You can find out about your local sales on http://www.nct.org.uk

We had a girl first time and a boy 2nd but a lot of the clothes from our 1st could also still be worn by the 2nd. I also wouldn't worry too much about the season, a lot of things can be worn any season, e.g dresses with a long sleeved top underneath or cardi on top. Also your babies could be quite different sizes so things that fitted one in one season might not fit another.

I get a lot of hand me downs from other people so I tend to pass on a lot of it, but any thing I love and also neutral stuff like vests I'm keeping. I did think at first I would get rid of any girly stuff but now I keep it as I would kick myself if we had another girl. I'm also keeping all my baby equipment too. We do plan on having more children and hopefully close together. I also wouldn't worry about seasons as there isn't much difference in this country anyway!! there weren't many days this year my dd could have her arm's and legs out, especially as you keep them out of the sun. Also summer stuff can be worn with a long sleeved vest under or tights for a girl.

one of my shcool friends had a baby girl about 4 months after me - all of katies clothes went to her, and i let her choose if she wanted to keep them or give them to charity.
i contemplated selling them, and also keeping them for the next one, but it boiled down to the fact that :
    1. i didnt have enough time to take a picture of eaxch item of clothing to put on ebay
    2. some of the stuff wasnt in good enough condition to sell
    3. i wanted to help my friend out like i was helped out!
    4. didnt keep them for myself cos i knew i would probably get a lot more new clothes for a new baby and therefore, they would have been wasting space in the loft!!

I have a large suitcase of baby clothes etc in the loft. I sorted things out and put by neutral stuff as well as a few outfits for each size. At the moment I tend to give all her stuff away to charity now as I have no more space in the suitcase and will no doubt buy new clothes at tesco, asda or primark if needed if we have a 2nd child. Was hopefully not not sure due to the fact we would need to move house etc and the next 2yrs are not looking great at the moment.

When we had our daughter Tabitha (now 3 1/2) I was quite definite that I did not want another child. A close friend of ours fell pregnant with a girl, so I donated all of Tabitha's clothes and crib, toys etc to them.
Hubby said he'd love another baby at the beginning of this year and in august we decided to go for it- I fell pregnant within 2 weeks of having the coil removed  and this baby is due about 2 weeks before Tabitha's birthday.

I wish I'd kept my crib, but the rest of the things were second hand to begin with, mostly from bootfares. Sods law I'll have a boy anyway :p
