It will have some tags at the top, one of which will be startup. This tells you all the programs that start up when you switch your computer on. If you uncheck the ones you don't want starting up, then click apply, that should speed it up a bit too.
If you're not sure which ones to uncheck, just google the startup items name, and it'll tell you what that program is used for, and if it's a required program for your operating system.
Wow -I can't believe the amount of stuff that's in startup - it's incredible, no wonder pc is slow. Lots I can see straight away don't need to be there, others I don't have a clue what it is so, as suggested will google before disabling.
Hopefully this should speed things up a bit!0

            Hi - I'm struggling!
Unchecked all the boxes that I feel safe with - loads of them.
Clicked on Apply, got message saying changes can't be applied, need to log on as Administrator. I am the administrator so don't understand.
Shutdown, now logged on again - following message:
"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows Normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.
Apart from launching the PC out of the window, which I'd really love to do at the moment, can anyone help?
 Many thanks

When the system utility box appears, there should be a little box saying do not show this message again or something like that. Just tick the box and click OK, that should get you back to normal startup.Wha's like us - damn few, an' they're a' deid

Personally id use CCLEANER to block the 'start up' programs. Certainly safer in my eyes:idea:0

Reluctant Spender or Browntoa, I think, posted this program, could be more useful than guessing what to disable.

Get a copy of Autoruns ..far more comprehensive.
You can hide essential microsoft entries to be safe.
Click the logon tab to see whats running on start up , and you can right click to check on line ,to see if you need it running.Always follow the path of least resistance.0
