How to tell what is in 'Startup' on PC

Hi

My PC is incredibly slow - i've deleted all unused programmes, I've done a defrag. When PC is starting up I'm sure I can hear lots of programmes whirring in the back ground.

How do I view what's in start up and then disable them?

Many thanks
Terri

    Google "hijack this"

    Or "piriform ccleaner".

Ccleaner is porbably easier to use for a novice. Click tools then startup.
  • Sorry to Hijack this :rotfl: but i have both these progs. CC cleaner is fine, no probs but I cannot make head nor tale of the info I get when I run Hijack this. Any thoughts please?

Downloading is a function of the speed of you network and the speed of their network, and probably not a result of your PC issues per se.

If you care to run hijack this too, and post up the log we can check you have no viruses or other malware.

If you took the filehippo option to download this might be better:

Thanks. I will try to run 'hijack' and post up the log.

Time to give up tonight. The PC just does not want to know. Thankfully I've got the laptop so, tomorrow, I will be asking questions and hopefully will get somewhere.

    Thanks again everyone. Goodnight.
  • To find all the programs designated to start when windows does:

Go to 'Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System tools'. Run 'System information'

Select 'Software environment -> Startup Programs' and it will list all your startup applications. A lot of these are run via the registry. You'll need to be careful if you start editing that.
  • If you go to start -> Run , then type in msconfig, a box will pop up called sysyem configuration utility.

It will have some tags at the top, one of which will be startup. This tells you all the programs that start up when you switch your computer on. If you uncheck the ones you don't want starting up, then click apply, that should speed it up a bit too.

If you're not sure which ones to uncheck, just google the startup items name, and it'll tell you what that program is used for, and if it's a required program for your operating system.
